Only thing I learned here was a new way to create drop down lists. I usually write the list in another tab and select that list as the source

You don't have to do Data validation for this at all.. If you choose to do Conditional Formatting like shown in the video, from C3:E17 with those rules, it's looking fort the exact text, regardless if it's a drop down selection or not.
