This was the SSO concert that I enjoyed most in 2017. Martin Helmchen was a late substitute for Nikolai Lugansky. It was a great performance with a full-bodied sound from the piano. The orchestra's playing was spritely and with energy. There was also an interesting introduction (not shown in the video) recounting an SSO performance of the Brahms No. 1 decades ago. The story was that the conductor and the orchestra intentionally played with such emotion and thunder in order to inspire the soloist - and it worked!

Delicate, sensitive Brahms. Famous but if you don't like sounds of Gilels or Zimerman which are strong and masculine, relatively extroverted interpretations of Brahms piano concertos, this rendition is going to be one of the proper alternatives. Also, Kamu and Singapore symphony orchestra's playing level is so high and refined.
