Written by Tom T. Hall. It spent twenty weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with three weeks at #1. The single, with backing vocals from Wright's wife, Kitty Wells, was Wright's most successful release on the U.S. country music chart. His singing partner from Johnnie and Jack, Jack Anglin, was killed in a car accident in March 1963.
The song came at a time when war protest songs dominated pop music charts and when public support for the war eroded.

All my uncles fought in Vietnam. They’ll never tell me everything they saw in that war. But I can only imagine.

This song reminds me of my grandfather. He served in Vietnam from 68 to 70. He speaks very little of his time there. To the point where he cant even watch certain war movies. Hes still alive thankfully. But every year I pray he stays well.

Searched for this album for a couple years and ran across it in a thrift store one day for a dollar. One of my favorite albums in my classic country collection.

Just saw a video of the scene in Full Metal Jacket with this song and instantly heard my grandfather singing. 😢 He passed away this summer. He was the best. Had a great taste in music. ❤

The song that made Johnnie wright the oldest artist to have a number one hit at one point. (He turned 51 when this song came out in 1965.) His record was broken twice, first by Kenny Rogers, who was 61 when "Buy Me A Rose" hit number one in 1999, and again by Willie Nelson, who was 70 when "Beer For My Horses" hit number one in 2003.

Rest In Peace, songwriter Tom T. Hall.
