About the Roads to Removal Report: There is an urgent need to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to ensure climate security and resilience. Roads to Removal: Options for Carbon Dioxide Removal in the United States provides a first-of-its-kind national scale analysis identifying how the United States might achieve its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Commissioned by the Department of Energy and led by researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) along with scientists at more than a dozen institutions across the nation, the report examines the potential capacity, costs and impacts of diverse CO2 removal approaches on a county-by-county level. Among the pathways and opportunities analyzed: soils, cropland and forest management; biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS); direct air capture (DAC); transportation and storage. The report also reviews labor, community, energy, equity and environmental justice considerations critical to success.
