HMPV, otherwise known as the Human Metapneumovirus, is a type of virus that affects the respiratory system and is a common cause of respiratory infections, particularly in children and older adults.
HMPV was first identified in 2001 and has since been recognised as a significant cause of respiratory illness worldwide.
HMPV is mostly associated with mild upper respiratory tract symptoms such as a cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, and possibly a fever.
To help us unpack this virus and also understand who is at risk we are joined virtually by Medical Researcher Professor Tulio de Oliveira as well as the Technical officer, Emergency Preparedness at the World Health Organisation Africa, Doctor Belinda Herring.
