Neglecting your smoke alarm testing and maintenance is dangerous and foolhardy. Both testing and maintenance should be done at regular intervals and it will only take you a few minutes.

- Test - once a week
Use the test button to test the smoke alarm weekly to make sure it still works.

- Clean - every 6 months
It is essential that smoke detectors are kept clean as a build-up of dust and other substances can act as an isolative layer over the sensors and reduce the effectiveness of the alarm. Gently vacuum inside the case (using the soft brush attachment) to remove dust from the smoke alarm sensors. If the case doesn't open, vacuum through the holes.
REMEMBER: it’s never wise to use any kind of spray or liquid cleaning product on anything electrical.

- Change battery - once a year
It is recommended to change the battery each year unless your alarm comes with a sealed battery with a fixed-life.

- Replace whole unit - when expire
Sensors get less responsive over time, so replace your smoke alarms at the end of its lifetime.

- Cover when you decorate
Build-up of dust and other substances can act as an isolative layer over the sensors and reduce the effectiveness of the alarm. Always cover smoke alarms before you start decorate the area.
