Briggs and Stratton plastic carb won't prime or start

Briggs and Stratton 300/550 primer bulb won't prime after main jet cleaning. Check to see if primer has an air leak through this side port. Seal off that port to get the primer to work.

Well, I tried your fix and it did work, but I've got a better one. Over the last few years, I've discovered the amazing cleansing power of Simple Green detergent. Ive used it for general cleaning for years, but recently found out that it really works well as a stain pre-treatment for clothing and if you have a mildew problem in your shower, you can clean with SImple Green first, then rinse and apply your regular mildew treatment. THe combination works so much better! Now, back to the primer. Soak the single gasket for about 30-seconds in simple green, massaging both surfaces gently until they feel smooth. Insert the gasket, reassemble the the air cleaner baseplate on the carb, the primer should work perfectly. Apparently Simple Green causes the gasket to swell slightly and that seals it on both surfaces.

I have to work on mine to. Its been in the shed for a year cause it had issues. Same mower, same carb on mine with same starting issues. I wonder if just a tiny amount of caulk or silicone on that tip to close the hole off, if that will work. A bit more of a semi permanent fix but idk. I've also had issues on this model with the brake cable grounding out the motor so it would run die, run and die. Have to deal with that to. Thanks for the video

found this video while trying to figure out what that piece was for. it appears like a hose is missing, but glad to see someone else had the same setup. I had to take apart and clean the carb, and my problem now is, gas is leaking out of that extra line.

Thanks Al...I have two mowers with those plastic jobs on them that I'll look into now that I'm armed with your well thought out info.

Nice video, but I drill that very bottom jet out to .025 with a # 72 drill bit and that will make it run better, more power and start first pull !!

Yes, some models had a hose go from that white thing, to a hole on the primer side of the air filter.

Mines doesn’t prime and surges when it runs. It won’t run smooth unless I give a little pressure on the prime button while it’s running. Thoughts? I cleaned out the main jet and the carb. Has new gas

My plastic white barbed fitting has no hole. perhaps some engines were fitted with the wrong one.

I am willing to bet, yalls mower, if it still isn't starting. It's likely due to the timing being off.

There is a plastic gear beneath flywheel that has a arrow that should like up with corresponding sister gear that's also marked. This is what was wrong with mine after replacing carb and covering all basics.

What is that hose called I'm looking at

when I push the primer bulb just once it floods the spark plug with fuel and refuses to start. I have to take out the plug and wipe and blow it dry. put it back in and it starts right up. fuel comes out of the air cleaner housing when I prime it 3 times.

It's for the folks that don't take their finger off the prime bulb when they're priming. It's a messed up engineering idea. It reduces the priming bulb's efficiency by about 70 %.

Priming bulbs worked just fine without the hole in the middle but God knows, we can't leave well enough alone. Engineers have to account for their paychecks somehow.
