i had an action figure collector that commented on one of my videos that it's weird that an adult would collect toys made for little girls. I replied that it's just as weird for him, an adult, to collect toys made for little boys.

Doll collecting is trendy rn. People who are trend collectors see things as investments and money making opportunities. A lot of collectors start out that way to justify their hobby to non collectors. Like why are you collecting dolls? Oh you make money? Oh then it’s more acceptable. The bratz makeup trend and Safiya Nygaard video contributed heavily to the Bratz inflation. Like beanie babies, people will realize it’s not worth the time and effort, and their dolls will end up sitting in their storage along with the beanie babies…. Only the true collectors will prevail.

There's actual doll people, and then there's people who just like to hop on to whatever the trend of the moment is.

it's the same thing with Scalpers. They don't buy dolls they want, they buy dolls to flip and make a $

I've noticed there's a lot of new non doll collectors starting to get into it, but they're not getting into it for the right reasons. they're getting into it to mark up to resell. I'm collector who has collected dolls, action figures, & old toys since I was a teenager, & now I'm 57 years old & I collect for my collection only not for resell. I've restored & customized dolls in the past for my mom, my sister, my great niece & my niece, & they were done as gifts only. 💜

Tbh i dont think these videos causing an upscale in pricing is the issue-since even when popular doll collectors make videos on obscure doll lines those said doll lines will upscale in pricing

The issue is more of the misinformsntion-mina presented barbie’s history as the very sugercoated sweet adorable story mattel has presented when in reality mattel stole lily from a small german compsny and ruined the creator of lily’s life because of said theft-she even described lily as a “call girl” when that was a mistranslation

I was excited too, then I watched Minas video and saw some misinformation in it and was like. Aw, man. We’re definitely about to see a influx of interest thanks to Barbie movies. 😅

I only got into collecting 7 months ago, and already seeing prices jump like crazy. Dolls that didn't go for over 15 before Christmas they're asking 40usd now. More annoying to me is it's harder to search resale sites without really narrowing results - market flooded with human Barbie logo items or just Barbie pink/ Barbiecore stuff. Gone are the days when "vintage barbie " search could find anything from a Miss Seventeen to a Totally Hair for a reasonable price because people just don't know lol

This is something that happened to Tamagotchis recently as well. I collect virtual pets along with dolls and a few years ago you could get the later model tamagotchis for around 40-60 boxed. And now, these toys that were originally 15 dollars retail can cost up to 200-300 dollars lol Another bright side is that if enough people are interesting into the hobby that company’s may actually release gooooddd rereleases.

I like the videos like kurtis conners and negative ledgends because i like to see outsiders thoughs on doll media and sometimes they genuinely are just funny.i hate the rising prices tho

In negative legend's defense, they do actually buy dolls and/or toys of the topic they're covering to get all the accurate information possible

2023 Doll YouTube feels like 2016 makeup YouTube

The only reason I am not looking forward to the Barbie movie you touched on in this video. New "collectors" are going to flood the market and drive up the second hand doll market.

I haven’t even watched the video yet, but I wanna say that I am so tired of these non doll collectors and even these “doll influencers” which we don’t even need making dolls more popular like I miss when doll collecting was this weird obscure thing only certain people did. I miss when it was considered cringey or creepy. Like it only makes things worse for people who love and collect dolls as a hobby by making the prices go up and people realizing that toys, older toys especially sell for so much (which a lot of them really don’t, especially if the condition is terrible.) Like please go find something else, leave us and our dolls alone!!

I just watched Minas video. It kind of upset me. The way she worded stuff made it sound like people who collects only do it because its "trendy". No hate to her or anything, but she should maybe redo that video.

And Negative Legend actaully is a doll collector! They are super cool :)

I haven’t dared watch Mina’s video because I like her so much and I don’t want to be disappointed. Your mention of the head dates made me laugh because my poor other half has had to listen to me rant about incorrect eBay listings where people are calling them 1960s dolls so many times!

agreed with this whole video, im actually a newer collector (started collecting in october of 2022). i havent had anyone in the community berate me for being a newer collector, but imo people who sit on piles of old dolls or hoard them in their garage solely for resell value or “investments” should be ostracized and deserve that response from genuine collectors. right now im only purchasing dolls that are playline or on shelves for that exact reason. those people make it so much more frustrating to enjoy the hobby and it’s unfortunately common within many collector communities, not just dolls. dolls are just trendy right now and its okay to have an interest in them because of trends but i would hate for people to just buy these dolls, forget about them in a month or two because theyre not trendy anymore, then go and sell them for triple the retail price. unfortunately thats possible and very well might happen in the next year or so.

Yes! I've been saying this for years! And what's really annoying is when you tell someone their 1966 stamped 90s or 2000s dolls are newer and they get mad. Then there's family members that don't agree with your collecting and say "Well if you were a true collector, you'd leave all the dolls in the original box, you're just a hoarder"
Outsiders sadly always look at it as something to profit off of. While true collectors know all or most of the history behind each doll, the names and years they were produced because its something they truly enjoy and are genuinely passionate about and are interested in. True collectors don't just go out looking for some simple random YouTube video to teach them about the things they love. Talking to fellow collectors and reading books on such topics is a great way to get alot of accurate information. It's really sad how misunderstood this fun colorful hobby really is 😥

I’m in the exact group niche of loving trendy fashion content and doll content, so I really adore this stuff. But even so I get a bit of a knot in my stomach every time a video comes out from large creators on dolls cause I know the prices will skyrocket and secondhand shopping becomes difficult for collectors! 💕

oh but when they all get bored and decide to offload their impulse-buy collections its gonna be glorious.... five more years until then 😫
