Hi,
here's a small collection of a few Lego Technic mechanisms that I stumbled over, but don't really have a direct use.
Enjoy watching,

Number two is far from useless. You're converting an extension spring (rubber bands, in this case) to a compression spring that 1) has no metallic components, meaning it's non-conductive and won't rust, and 2) is fine-tunable by changing the peg positions and/or the number/type of rubber bands.

Number 3 could be used anywhere you need to convert between rotational motion and oscillation. If you had a flywheel to keep it from seizing, you could possibly make a pendulum powered vehicle.

If you used bent liftarms for number 4, you could make a Hoberman Linkage.

And a Trammel of Archimedes is far from useless, since it can be used to draw ellipses. If instead of just using a short, peg-to-peg liftarm, you used one that extended outside of the frame, the end point of that liftarm would trace an elliptical path, where the difference between the major and minor axes of the ellipse is equal to twice the distance between the centers of the sliders.

You say that it’s useless, but you know you’re giving people ideas

That third mechanism actually seems perfect for a dual-light switch setup, like for stairwells without windows. One light switch can be rigged by cable or electric motor to the other so they both mirror each other. When one switch goes up, the other does as well, just by simple rotation triggered by the first one. That way the on/off is synchronized, rather than using the existing “or” gate circuit houses do today.

The way the music cuts and he kind of pauses when he made that star accidentally was what got me hahah

LEGO remains one of the most underrated products. When they first introduced Technic parts in the late 1970’s and followed that with sets for schools to promote understanding of mechanisms and then computer control, we are only limited by our imagination and the durability of the plastic. There are things that even LEGO engineers haven’t considered. This is great!

2 is to change linear into circular movement or vice versa, 3 is for stirring, 4 to reach around corners of roof edges, 5 can be used for routing or drawing ellipses.

The slider looks like it could be used as a sort of boat paddle/scuttle mechanism, with the way it twists back and forth.

Very cool mechanisms, not useless at all !!

2:11: This one could actually be useful for a pick and place mechanism

I was promised useless mechanisms, but at least 3 of these are excellent solutions to some tricky problems. 😁

The curving scissor lift almost became how my all terrain vehicle remake deploys its mobile lab. But I couldn’t find the right combo of leverage, rigidity, and range of motion.

When I was a kid, I had an Archimedes Trammel toy, it was called "Blankety Crank".

You should make a car with those shock absorbers

The offset scissor would be useful for a jack in the box

3rd one was useful because if you want to make something go up and down then it will be useful. Like a tow truck which is having differentials in all axels but not in 1 axel which can be switched up and down

The offset scissors mechanism is used in some official Lego sets from the line "competition" (Cyber Strikers Cyber Slam, for example)

Id argue that the last one is the only one that could be considered useless

The shock absorber would definitely make a powerful launcher of marbles and other things if you add a base at one end of it

Nice video! I never heared about some of these mechanisms! Is good to learn new mechanism and building tehniques for my MOC s.

#3 could be useful. If you want to make a gearbox for cars, you can do this.Of course it is not the actual way a gearbox works but it would still do its job perfectly fine.

Satisfying design is never useless, just without utilization.
