Learning Other Styles

Is copying art okay? There's a lot we can learn from a master study. Recently, I did a video on studying two artists I admire to learn about their linework.

Have you ever done a master study?

Studying other artstyles is a topic I always struggle with! I want to learn how and what they do so I can try and incorporate them to my own art but it is very difficult to know where to start when studying someone else

this just doesn't feel like a proko video without that one song 😢

I find my most helpful master studies are often from sketches and preparatory work. Raphael’s sketches taught me brushwork more than his paintings!

I love love love loish! I've been following her on Tumblr for a while and I always look forward to her posts. I just love the organic feel to her lines and shapes! An amazing artist, truly.

Having goals and deliberate intent for each study is so important. I see too many student, even my own, go into master studies, film studies, and life painting, without really knowing what they’re trying to accomplish. It really accelerates your learning.

I mostly use references from Kim Jung Gi and Karl Kopinski. They are my idols.(I'm a little jealous of Stan because he saw them both live)

For my art, I tend to stick with video game and manga artists from the late 90s to the early 2000s. Ayami Kojima is a personal favorite of mine, along with the artists from Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, and the Ocarina of Time Era Zelda games. The art is a sense of being realistic, but is somewhat either dramatized or softened with the atmosphere being surrealistic.

Do you have a video about how to do master studies ? As you said, it's not about copying but I have no idea how to break down someone's style or understand what/why they did something

Loisvb's shape design is so nice. Definitely an artist I wanna study more. Her color choices are lovely too.

I've been drawing Michael Whelan album and book covers lately, I don't get every detail right, but I focus on it being as close as possible.

I learned to paint from studying my favorites on Colors! for the 3DS, they had an autoplay feature for all of the paintings and I sucked up all of the techniques, applying bits here and there to my own. I massively improved in a year and it's still my favorite feature today. I kinda wish there was another social playback art gallery out there like it.

Roger Lecureux is one of my childhood idols. I grew up on his and his son's "Rahan" comic book series and always wanted to be able to draw like them

Conan! ❤ I literally learned how to read with Conan the Barbarian comics, when I was 5.

It’s funny that a master’s study is considered a copy to others. It reminded me of a time where I was doing a master study of Van Gogh, my mom accused me of copying, honestly i believe a masters study is the best way to improve your style and art in general! Go for it!

I remember seeing lineart not in the color black as a child and that alone opened a whole perspective lol
