The Acer Predator Helios 500 features up to a 8th Gen i9+ 8950HK, GTX 1070 graphics card and a high refresh 144hz Full HD 17.3" display. At 4KG and nearly 40mm thick - it's a whopper of a gaming notebook! Starting from £1800 / $2000 from June - here's my hands-on review.

As an owner of a predator 15 equipped with 6700HQ and GTX1060, i can observe some thermal throttling happening. So thank you for telling future buyer's of this lovely machine what they really should expect. Thank you !

Interestingly enough the Helios 500 has a larger footprint, is a half inch thicker and comes in 3 pounds heavier than the similarly fitted Asus Strix Scar Edition GL703GS... I'm shopping both these units to use while traveling. It might be counter intuitive, but I may be partial to the Acer because of its massive size. Have to wonder if the increased size allows for better cooling, performance and durability. There is a review of the Asus Scar hitting 90 degrees regularly. Thank you for taking the time to review this!

I bought it one month ago. Yes it is heavy but portable enough. Played pubg for 6 hours str8t on ultra settings. Cpu temp was 65 celsius avarage and max cpu temp was 75 celsius. Gpu temp was only around 55 avarage and max was 67. Of course fan speed on max. Room temp was over 26 celsius. This thing is best choice for 2000 usd. 8750h, gtx1070 8gb, 16gb 2400mhz, 250gb ssd, 1tb storage. Mine was on sale and i bought it 1799usd from microcenter. Hope it helps other people who trying to choose between fat and portable enough or slim very portable laptops. Good luck

As Always You nailed it Tom. A 1080 would have been great in a laptop this thick.
Thank You.

I believe that the website shows an alternate configuration with Vega 56 and Ryzen 2700. That's pretty unique.

I'd used it in starbucks. I don't care what anyone says. Cool looking laptop with nice blue accents. Should've a GTX1080 variant but Acer may put in a new helios series lineup.

I had predator with gtx 970 and it was big yes but as for gaming laptop you wont find better cooling machine then this one, i had my voltages unlocked on gpu (OCed) and even with that on max fans i was able to play demanding games in lower 70C!
Now i have Clevo with 1060 and as i think is much more slicker then predator the noise is on another level -thinner equals less copper equals more noise .
Im going for Helios 500 with 1080p screen 144hz, with new HK cpu and 1070 ill be good for next 2 years of gaming on top of that Predator screens are NO joke!

TBH 38mm thick it not so much for gaming laptop keeping in mind that cooling is quite efficient and that is a desktop replacement.

I do like that laptop and it's time to upgrade the Alienware as soon as I see a deal.

i'll give yas an idea - ive got one of these and with out the over clocking program running... im getting Very high fps on steams Fallout4, high texture pack, maxed out with heavy mods and the gtx1070 gpu is running just under halfway, i7 (6core) cpu is like 5-15 percent most o time ;)

ps: mine is the 8750 cpu (i7 6core/12thread 2.2) with gtx1070 and 16gig 2400 ram - turbo can run cpu to 4ghz and the "predatorsense" over clocking program can increase 1/3rd more power in the gtx1070 when and if I run it... and yes you can set different colours on the keyboard. ("starcitizen" full - Easy!)

im very picky on my hardware - this version cost me $3k (? $2k US...) best bang for buck vs a $10k clevo/mtech laptop that bets the likes of msi and alienware... yes their WAY more powerfull but really - the predator is all you need now and keep ya going for years, but get at least a 1070 with 8g ram is the trick - the 1080 is just a little faster.

pps: Ive been gaming for over 40yrs and have had the worlds fastest pcs before - 2-5yrs later youll own a $200 pc's when playing at the top end - Food for your thought. ;)

After spending £1500 on an Alienware Gaming Laptop many years ago, I vowed to never do so again, and put my money into a Desktop PC. I just can't justify spending that amount of money on a machine like this, ...I mean, again. lol
