160 Special Operations Aviation regiment holds the record for the number of on time arrival and departures in u.s. army aviation history., the current standard in the regiment is plus or minus 30 seconds of scheduled arrival/ departure. One of the sayings in the regiment is" plus or minus 30 seconds or the next ride is free" units have been able to literally set their watches on that accuracy" night stalkers never quit" they have been known to fly into combat situations through weather conditions, that would ground everybody else.

I've had around 80 drops but less pickups from a little bird and can honestly report that the pilots of this airframe are built differently to any other. In 1992, three of us had been doing a little recon and had humped ourselves a long way to the LZ and the little bird that turned up had a skid bent so badly it couldn't land entirely to collect us. The pilot had had an, "incident with a tree" earlier in the day and refueled before collecting us with the belly of the bird sitting on sandbags.
He went on to pickup three other recon teams after us. The next day, the bird wasn't allowed to fly after inspection as the frame under the pilots seat was torn in two. The pilots nickname became, "Skid". He flew many missions during the 90's often hot and Skid became a legend to those transported.
When you're heading out it's always nice to have a friendly pilot with balls and courage on your side. The killer egg is only the tool. The pilot is the hero.
Goose AB, 1989 to 1999.

Used to know a civilian medical evacuation (Life Flight) pilot that flew for the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston. He was a Vietnam veteran pilot, where I was told he flew MedEvac. I do know that in the years that I worked in EMS I saw that man put that Life Flight helo into places that I didn't think it would fit, or that no same pilot would try to put one. There was another pilot in the area that flew for another service that was also a military trained pilot that was just about as crazy. Thing was, we in the local fire departments always knew that along as we heard one of those pilots voices on the radio communicating with us, that aircraft was going to get there and it was going to pick up the patient we called it for.

For urban combat, nothing can compete against the AH6i little bird. 6 blade main rotor and 4 blade tail rotor. It can maneuver around buildings, land on a city street or rooftop, and carry a boat load of ordinance.

As a Ranger I enjoyed many rides such as this.

Back in 1989 I was assigned to A CO 1/228 Avn just after Operation Just Cause in Panama I had the opportunity to ride in our Blackhawks on training for troop insertions and pick up it was mind blowing how quick a good pilot to drop off and pick up troops

Who ever came up with the idea of soar came up with one genius idea. I haven't heard of any other countries having similar units. When most people think of spec ops they think of bad ass foot soldiers but not bad ass helo pilots that will fly in somewhere even if they know they most likely will get shot at.

I learned about 160th SOAR back in 1993 during black hawk down. These guys are the real deal. Michael Durant, all of em. God bless these men and women for everything they sacrifice

I've seen the 160th SOAR training in Washington and Kentucky and trust me, this guys do some crazy stuff! Just on Fort Campbell they literally fly over a small river just below the tree line. And not just little birds, Chinooks too...

Worked with 160th soar and was amazed by the timeliness and professionalism. They literally showed up to the jet 1 minute prior to their arrival time and basically loaded their own helos quickly and efficiently with very few words! In addition they literally appeared out of the blue like they were from no one saw them coming

Never realized how small these helos were until I was on the USS Barry and Miami SWAT landed 2 of them on our flight deck!

Would be like a super hero feeling being part of their unit! 🦸🏼‍♂️

The pilots are from SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment) the best of the best. Best known for flying ops for Delta Operators and 75th reg Rangers during the Somalia Mogidishu conflict in 1993.

DEVGRU are the guys that nobody knows about, if they're at your door, then that means you done with something not even the devil himself could get away with.
