Ethel arrived in Colombia in 1970 after traveling around the world, eager to create art that depicted Medellin, her new home. Her work, which was initially influenced by abstract expressionism and pop art, addresses the problems of a country of patronal festivals, friendly people, and violence to create paintings that, as she stated, "cannot be pigeonholed into any artistic trend." Her work can be found in the permanent collections of museums in Colombia and the United States.
