You can see the leidenfrost effect as it sinks down. There's a "skin" of steam produced around the ball which actually shields the ball from the ice for a time.

Could you do again with a thermal lense? I’d be curious to see how the temp changes of the ball as it goes through the ice cause the ball to shift around and spin

It's kind of astonishing that the ice doesn't immediately fracture under the thermal stress, but it seems that the ice which melts to water & steam acts to transfer most of the heat away & protect the remainder of the ice.
