When the journal had drawings of her anatomy as a mermaid, it made me wonder whether part of her choice in leaving was because she knew he would never fully understand her. Their connection would never be the same as the one she shares with the sea.

When I was little, growing make my legs hurt, and my mom always tell me the storie of the little mermaid. That's gave me hope my pain was to be able to dance one day. Now I'm grown up, I love to dance, I love the ocean, I love the melancholy of this sort of tale, and I love Kiki's songs. 😭♥️

reading other people's interpretation is so wholesome because i thought he got those anatomy drawings by experimenting on other mermaids and when she realised it she drowned herself because she was unable to turn back into a mermaid but she couldn't stay either

Every time Kiki releases a new video, we get a new fairy tale to explore. And somehow all these supernatural beings are so very human that it's impossible not to feel along with them. The direction is fantastic, and the actors pulled at my heart. I love everything about this song and video.

I’m a competitive sailor (yes it’s a thing) and when you sing “this grave will fit me better than a landlocked home” is exactly the mindset you must have when sailing. This song is sooo beautiful 🌊⚓️🧜🏼‍♀️🐡

I think this song is mainly about changing yourself for someone else and then regretting it later. The man seems at first mainly curious about the creature and soon mistakes this curiosity for love. He tries to understand the creature by studying as much as possible about it without thinking about its feelings. Even decades later he still has hope in seeing her and tries to keep remembering all the memories he has made with her. All the while the creature was genuinely interested in the man and sacrificed its life in the sea for him, knowing that he isn't immortal like the creature. As soon as it realises that it was just a mere study in his eyes, it left and didn't come back.

The mermaid character randomly caught my eye. *Premieres in 17 hours* patiently waiting while doing other chores

After reading the comments i've realized i interpreted this video very different than most people, and maybe different from how it was intended. I didn't see the end as a going back to her life as a mermaid but more as a permanent solution to her overwhelming feelings, as suicide is most of the time. The strong emotion of her first ever love, giving up on her life, home, herself and a part of her womanhood for a man she doesn't even truly know or understand and also doesn't feel completely understood by. She has a strong fear of a future on land, away from what she loves most, the sea, her home, with humans that will never truly know her and pressed into a role that she wasn't made for. She realized giving up on the sea also ment giving up on her freedom and the one place that lets her fully feel herself. She loves this man but love isn't quite enough againt the fear of being misunderstood and seen as an object for him to explore aswell as facing the truth of her forever lifetime while he will die way earlier than her. She has made the painful decision of loosing her tail but isn't even sure if she regrets it and the unknowing is just so strong and overwhelming she seeks the comfort of the one thing she knows and loves, which is the sea. In her heart she knows she can't ever grow the tail back but she still decides to take one last forever swim feeling the freedom and comfort of her loved ocean waves and praying to the sea that her man will understand and forgive her for her fear of the unknown.
