Unlock Big Analog Sound: Audient ASP4816-HE Console

In this video, we review the Audient ASP4816-HE – Heritage Edition small format analogue recording console.

Our choice to use the ASP4816-HE in our new studio is rooted in our hybrid mixing approach. I love to tackle the finer details “in the box” using Pro Tools, but there’s something incredibly satisfying about handling the “global” elements on an analogue console. The tactile control and the warmth of analog are irreplaceable, and the ASP4816-HE offers the perfect balance between digital precision and analog richness.

In the box is truly wonderful, recall, recording and not changing anything from one day to the next, or months, years... digital does not degrade. But analog has a special advantage: it is musical. There is no point in complaining, there is no way to contradict this. It can be a Behringer, a Soundcraft, a Mackie, or for those who can, an SSL, Neve, an API, etc. When the audio is passed through analog equipment, latency is replaced by harmonics, bits are replaced by capacitors, CIs, transistors and potentiometers. The sound wave does not stop being a wave at any stage of the processing. Analog audio is not perfect and this pleases the human ear a lot. Great acquisition, Warren, an analog console that communicates with ProTools, making it work almost exclusively as a "tape machine", only with audio stored in digital format.
But when you go back to mix on the soundboard, the analog sound overlaps any trace of processing by digital plugins.

This console was designed by Dave Dearden, who previously had the company DDA... Dearden, Davies, and Associates. They produced the DDA AMR 24, which was a PHENOMENAL console! Seeing that Dave has come back around with Audient, and has responded to the 'lower end' of the market (in a similar manner as Focusrite has done), with premium products is something that makes me feel really happy. I had the opportunity to talk with Dave back in the 90s and have to say that he IS the real deal... one of the few real console designers remaining!

It's kind of crazy how much the bass expand and Heritage processing brings the snare forward. Glad to finally see the new space, Warren! Great to see Michael's awesome room still get some use!

The console sounds amazing! If I was tracking bands and had the budget, I'd certainly get one. Thanks for the demo Warren.

I bought a used 4816 and there's so much amazing connectivity options that I have the MS-16 tape machine and Logic returning to the mixer with both sets of faders returning tracks. 32 tracks with the aphex 141 converters. It's a total blast!

What a smashing piece of kit, Warren 👍As a hobbyist dabbler who's never paid for a plugin let alone owned real hardware, it's rare that I watch one of your incredibly informative videos without thinking "I should really be writing this down" 🙂 And I frequently do take notes so thank you again for your generosity in sharing your incredible knowledge 👍 I look forward to the Kindle ebook version of your wonderful "Home Studio Recording: The Complete Guide" (2023). I know, I know, broken record 🙂

My first job after college in 1983 was with DDA - Dearden Davis Associates, both ex of Soundcraft. I believe DDA were bought out by Audient as I see David Dearden's name is penned on the desk. Good to see he's still going strong 40-plus years on.

As an owner of an Audient iD14, one of their consoles is dream gear for me. So cool to see someone who's opinion i respect using one.

Using the 4816 SE at a local college for a commercial recording class, it's a great teaching console.

Wow. Great sounding raw tracks. Touch of analogue compression and eq and voila. Singer sounds amazing.
I’ve never worked on a console. DAWs have had a massive negative effect on my creativity lately. What a gift you’ve been given Warren to have such talent and a life of relationships with musical productions as well as artists etc. Super inspiring. Your passion is so evident. Thanks for the rundown.

It's a lovely console, have one in my studio, one small point, at 5:13 the low bump isn't engaged until you turn the transformer on. From the manual - "Note: Low Bump and High Lift are part of the mix bus processor circuit and will only affect the mix when the XFRMR drive is engaged" I fooled myself it was doing something previously too before I read up on it.

I love the ASP console from Audient, I had the opportunity to use an asp 8024 without the heritage circuit on it, at the music technology university at Rethymno Greece where I studied and worked also as an assistant. It was the product that introduced me to the brand years before they even make their first interfaces. I loved using the built in master compressor.
Also I loved using the solo in front, you can focus on individual instruments while hearing how they may fit in the mix. I ve made a button that does the same at Reaper and I use it often

I really love your content Warren. I am quite new into music production and mixing and your channel is by far the most helpful one. Such a wonderful person you are, helping noobs like me out. I wish I could afford joining the academy. I am so thankful you make free content for people like me. This helps me through a very hard time. From the bottom of my heart - thank you! Greetings from Germany
