The GAP Between Rich & Poor in Lima (Peru)

LIMA, PERU.

Join us as we visit the diverse neighborhoods of Lima, check out a local market, and try some traditional Peruvian food featured in Street Food Latin America.

From our home base in the affluent Miraflores neighborhood, we first head south to Villa El Salvador, a shantytown on the outskirts of Lima — and one of the city’s poorest districts. It is home to around 400,000 people.

From there, we head to Chorillo, an exclusive, gated beach community right next to Villa El Salvador.

Finally, we check out Surquillo Market #2 to try Huerta Chinen, the famous restaurant featured in Street Food Latin America.

Thanks for making this and sharing. I visited Lima over 20 years ago and liked it a lot, even the "shanty towns". Despite the wealth disparity, Lima does appear to be a better, cleaner, and safer city than it was years ago. Peru is a wonderful country overall, great people, and I'd go back tomorrow if I had the money to do so.

You are surprised of the checkpoint in the wealthy subdivision, it seems that you have never been in affluent places in the USA.

4:04 On the left side you can see that a "mototaxi" is leaving (the personal transportation of people with low economic resources), so, the gated community is not that gated, the "militarized" entrance is for vehicle registration but They do not prevent you from entering, I have entered several times with my friends to go to the beach, they never restricted our access, they only asked us the reason for our entry, they recorded how many of us there were and we passed. If you go on foot, by bicycle, scooter, etc. you can enter directly without any registration or questions, in fact, there is a free pass next to it. You went through the main entrance that has the porch but there are other secondary entrances that do not have it. You can also enter from the beach which, by the way, is public but very uncrowded because there is no business in the surrounding area and the waves are very strong, me and my friends went there for that reason, it was like going to the end of the world.

Give that lady that’s been working there for 38 years more money!!! That lady deserves so much more than I personally say than the other fancy restaurant in Peru

Love the work you have done producing this informative video - in regards of social and economic disparity is a challenge that can be found in most countries EVEN in the G7 or developed nations there is inequality. Poverty has decreased in the last twenty five years… it was worst and we pray Peru will continue changing for the best

My moms from Peru and I wouldnt have it any other way. I love the food, and Macchu Picchu is so beautiful I also went to Lake titicaca and Mancora a beach town. I dont know what any of it looks like now. I went when that 8 magnitude earthquake hit I was actually IN PERU in LIMA it was so scary. I shut my eyes and prayed to God not to die but. I lived and I wouldnt trade the beautiful I nature I saw for staying in LA to eat in n out 😂

Villa el salvador is definitely NOT a shanty town, it has parts near the mountains that could be considered shanty towny, but that's a minority of the district And its nothing at all like a favela in Brazil.
People who colonized the district grew it from literal dirt 50 years ago to 3-5 story houses, industrial areas, huge parks, businesses, universities, etc. The difference is in the flatland and the hills within the same district, more recent migrants vs more established migrants.

Miraflores is an old district, 170 years old.

What's your point, try going to parts of Chicago or Detroit or Los Angeles, if you don't get robbed, shot or rapped, I'll be surprised?

The contrast is less pronounced from area to area. If you drive from Las Casuarinas to Pamplona Alta, you will find middle class neightboorhods in southeastern Surco and then working class areas in middle SJM. Pamplona Alta, Pamplona Baja and proper San Juan have different realities.
