Ukraine has taken a page from the US war in Vietnam: focus on the supposed casualties of the other side to try to maintain popular support for the war and avoid peace negotiations. The truth is, the United States killed over two million Vietnamese, the large majority of them civilians, while just 52, 000 American troops were killed by the Vietnamese. In the end, the Vietnamese won, and the United States lost. The Vietnamese simply had a greater will to gain their national independence than the United States had a will to conquer. I don’t know whether the Russians have a greater will to prevent more NATO missiles on their border or the Ukrainians have a greater will to defeat the Russians. But I do know that body counts are not a valid measure of which side is winning a war.
