Join me for a journey to Varenna and Bellagio in beautiful Lake Como, Italy.

Welcome to Lake Como, one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations in all of Italy. Nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, this stunning lake is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering breathtaking scenery, charming towns, and world-class cuisine.

Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, stretching over 56 square miles, and surrounded by steep, forested hills and snow-capped peaks. Its deep, clear waters have inspired artists, writers, and musicians for centuries. With its mild climate and stunning natural beauty, Lake Como has become a popular vacation spot for people from around the world.

SUGGESTED TRIP ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Varenna and Lake Como Boat Tour
Morning: Arrive in Varenna and check into your accommodation. Easily accessible by train via Milan, Varenna is a charming and picturesque town with colorful houses and narrow alleys. Enjoy a traditional Italian breakfast in one of the local cafes.

Afternoon: Take a boat tour on Lake Como to explore the stunning scenery and charming villages along the lake's shores. The boat tour will take you to Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo, where you can enjoy the beautiful villas and gardens. You can also stop for a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake.

Evening: Return to Varenna and enjoy a delicious dinner in one of the local restaurants. Try some of the local specialties.

Day 2: Explore Varenna, Vezio Castle, Villa Monastero
Morning: Start your day with a leisurely breakfast and then explore the town of Varenna. Visit the Church of San Giorgio and admire the stunning views of the lake from the churchyard. Stroll through the narrow alleys and admire the colorful houses and flower-filled balconies. Then head over to Villa Monastero, a beautiful villa and botanical garden located just a short walk from the center of the village. The villa dates back to the 12th century and has been owned by several prominent families over the centuries.

Afternoon: Take a hike to Vezio Castle, a medieval fortress perched on a hill overlooking the lake. The hike will take you through olive groves and ancient woods. Once you reach the castle, you can explore the ruins and enjoy the breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Evening: Enjoy dinner in Varenna at one of the local restaurants. Try some of the local wines and enjoy the charming atmosphere of the town. Take a walk by the lakeshore and take in the quiet serenity of the lake.

Day 3: Day Trip to Bellagio
Morning: Take a ferry to Bellagio, one of the most beautiful and charming towns on Lake Como. The ferry ride will take you along the lake's shores, where you can admire the stunning villas and gardens.

Afternoon: Explore the town of Bellagio, with its narrow alleys, elegant boutiques, and charming cafes. Visit the Villa Melzi, a beautiful villa and garden that dates back to the 19th century. You can also take a hike to Punta Spartivento, a panoramic viewpoint that offers stunning views of the lake and the Alps.

This is a beautiful video journey of Lago di Como. My wife and I have stayed in Varenna and Bellagio multiple times in the 20-teens. Varenna has a rail station which is convenient to disembark from the Milan train; from that station, you can stay in Varenna or take the ferries to Bellagio or any other destination on the lake. Varenna is very quiet during the day and absolutely magical at night. Food is matchless here and the hotels are pretty reasonable in cost. I noticed at the end of the video people getting off the ferry cross-lake in Menaggio. This is a pretty town for a half-day trip, and Lugano, Switzerland is a short bus trip away - although I was unable to arrange this. We also stayed in Bellagio for a number of days. I found a reasonable third-floor apartment here; I would avoid anything on the waterfront hotels except for some very fine bars for a cocktail-hour spritz. Bellagio has a number of very fine restaurants for any hour of the day; go up the steps to the top main street. Finally, it is worth taking a day to take the ferry all the way to the city of Como. The ferry stops at many small towns along the way, and Como has fine restaurants, bars, waterfront parks, and shops. For some reason, the travel press ignores the city of Como, which I found to be a great day-trip.
