Turkey Delivers Medical Aid Supplies to United States

A Turkish military cargo plane carrying the medical equipment to support the United States as it grapples with the coronavirus outbreak landed at Andrews Air Force Base Tuesday evening. The airplane was greeted by Philip Thomas Reeker, Acting Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affair at the State Department and Serdar Kilic, Turkey's ambassador to Washington.

A top Turkish official said Turkey sent 500,000 surgical masks, 4,000 overalls, 2,000 liters of disinfectant, 1,500 goggles, 400 N-95 masks and 500 face shields.

Turkey has sent similar medical equipment aid to a total of 55 countries - including Britain, Italy and Spain - in an apparent attempt to improve its global standing by positioning itself as a provider of humanitarian aid in times of crisis.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday his government is working on a detailed plan to ease coronavirus restrictions, but warned that weekend lockdowns would most likely continue until after the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan in May.

By April 128 countries had reached out to Turkey for help and and now that number has reached (from memory) 181. A hospital ship was also sent to Chad. May God bless the Turkish government a thousand fold. Turkey is listed as the 18th wealthiest country so my question is, what are the other 17 doing? They’re supposedly wealthier so why are they desperate for supplies and struggling with hospital beds? The Turkish government is an excellent example of how a government should take care of its citizens. Turkey has state of the art fully equipped mega hospitals, no bed shortages and no supply or equipment shortages means health workers are able to work and take care of the sick without stress. Ambulance rides, hospital stays and treatments/medications are completely free!! Hundreds of citizens living abroad who’d caught the virus were also flown to Turkey for treatment. Tourists who were stranded at the onset of the outbreak had 3 meals meals per day delivered to their door, as did every elderly 65 and over. In fact many doctors and nurses voluntarily lived in the hospitals for several months in order to be readily available to treat patients, to not lose time commuting between home and work and to eliminate the risk of taking home the virus if they were to be infected. Again, why did the wealthier countries struggle?? Clearly money wasn’t an issue.
