Bernard was a personal friend of mine. I miss him and wish the world had really honored this great soul from Houston. I am grateful for the friendship we shared during our times in LA. I still have the VHS tape he gave me of some of his live performances. His contribution to the world in this classic, another was “It’s the same old song.” A song the late great Joe Williams would always sing. There is so much beauty, truth, and wisdom in his words and his music.

“When children laugh and play. It’s the same. When a woman giving birth cries out in pain. It’s the same. When a soul in pain cries out to God. It’s the same…..” Though no longer physically here. He remains embodied in these precious gems he left for us. Bernard is still my friend.

I come by here because I remember growing up and listening to my mother her and band "The Spirit of 76" practice singing as I listen from the basement window in the mid 70's.
Then in my 20's I remember hearing her sing this in different Nite clubs in Chicago "Swinger's on 87th St. and The Other place on 75th St. and a few others
Between this and Chaka Khan's "My Funny Valintine" I can almost still hear her singing!
Some of the best memories in my life. Thanks Mr. Ighner R.I.H. Sir.

Love the covers of this song by Oleta Adams and George Benson, but it's still something about the original from Bernard Ighner that gets me everytime.

We embrace change and loathe it at the same time. Today we laugh, tomorrow we cry - not a day goes by where we can't feel the loss. That's another thing you can count on. I will count the blessings until they drown out those things that take love away. I will teach me to be a better person.

It was the theme song of my high school graduation in 1977. I was 16 and this song made me cry.

Wow! Here because I saw him while watching the show 227 (Season 1, Ep. 14 - "The Big Piano Payoff). Had never heard of Bernard Ighner before and he was a native Houstonian. First time listening to it all the way through - it was always too haunting sounding to me. Now that I'm older, it makes total sense and is so beautiful.

This is still one of my favorite songs. I remember when I first bought Quincy Jones’ Body Heat album. I dug all the tracks on it but when Everything Must Change came on I was blown away by everything about; the music, musicianship, production, arrangements, but most of all the lyrics and Bernard Ighner’s vocal performance.

I really love this rendition. Bernard was a great talent and may God grant him peace and mercy. I would love to know the name of who provided the beautiful trumpet solo piece.
