Serum Tutorial - Organic Custom Wavetables Tips & Tricks

In this video we dive deeper into Xfer Serum's custom wavetable feature, following on from my previous Organic Synths for Serum video. After covering the basics for this technique I also cover some of the things I've learned since posting the original video, including the importance of sample selection as well as some new techniques in the wavetable editor itself. I hope you find this tutorial useful, let me know what types of sound design you'd like me to cover next!

use "dynamic pitch follow" for anything more complicated than a simple tone
use "dynamic pitch zero" crossing for simple waveforms
those both compensate for changing pitches, where the integer formula frame sizes don't necessarily divide equally into the original sample pitches
"remove DC offset" adjusts Y of frames to center around the zero crossing line
"fade edges" fades each table/frame to the zero crossing line
"x-fade edges" fades each table/frame into itself at the edges
"morph spectral" creates frames between frames: spectral accounts for possible phase cancellation that could happen with regular "morph crossfade" frames that sum two similar but out of phase frames
note you can only have 256 frames so you might want to use the 'double' or whatever to shrink them into less frames before morphing

Hey man, great insights. A friend of mine showed me how to do this same technique with neurobass oneshots to get new interesting sounds. I started a tutorial channel as well, partially inspired by seeing yours like 2 years ago or so. Cheers 👽🤟

Very cool. But interested: what’s the benefit in creating custom wave tables vs using a traditional sampler? You can still apply modulation, effects etc to samples so why not take that route? Interested to know what sounds can be made you can’t get elsewhere... thanks!

Really helpful! Would you be able to do a Bass tutorial for the Brooks Bass? Seems to be such an iconic sound and would really be interesting!

Checking the sample rate/exporting at at the correct sample rate worked wonders. I had imported a horn sample and was able to coax a decent sound from Serum with wavetable processing - Phase Set, X-fade (16 samples), Morph. Then I discovered that the sample rate was 48k. I exported it at 44.1k and imported into Serum again. Voilà! A clean sound and no processing required.

Might be a dumb question, but where do you type in a custom sample split value for a pitched sample?
