I just wanna sharing my experience learning Korean by myself for this past 10 years (or maybe longer than that?? I don't even count). Seriously it IS really difficult when someone asked you to speak in 반말 because it's awkward, like REALLY awkward. I learn Korean from a Korean learning website and books so I tried my best to learn it in a right way (I know you understand what I mean). and because of that process, I tend to speak in 존댓말 whenever I make Korean friends even though my speaking partner is younger or even the same age. they'll be like "you know since we're at the same age (or older) just speak casually". I was like "oh ok then" but in the process I can't help but keep speaking in 존댓말 LOL. as for now I can speak in 반말 with them but sometimes I unintentionally speak in 존댓말. learning language is really challenging but exciting at the same time.
