i am obsesed with this routine. it's my favorite program of the series- as i'm sure it is for a lot of people.
a.) yuri finally gets to accurately represent himself. canonically, he choreographs this routine himself and picks his own music. his clothes don't look like a typical performance costume and considering his personal style, it's fair to assume the clothes he's wearing are his own street clothes outside of the blazer and glittery gloves, both of which he discards. leather pants and a band tank seems very plisetsky, and as someone who used to do dance, the fact that it was cut up was probably to increase movement of the fabric for drama.
this is especially cool for this character, because throughout the series he is constantly put to move to music and skate to choreography that does not really suit his brash, loudmouthed personality. (both in his agape and his allegro appassionato, one being put together by viktor and the other by lillia.)
b.) the speed of the routine and difficulty level of jumps and spins really showcases his ability as a skater. in fact, (i have a little background in figure skating) at one point shortly before the end of the routine he hits two multiple axels in quick succession. I did try to count the number of rotations but the frame rate was difficult to view but it is likely 4 and then 3 rotations each, so a quad and then triple axel. axels are notoriously the most difficult jump to land. i actually think otabek kind of "tsks" at this in the following shot. as if he was a little concerned or annoyed at yuri for putting such a difficult jump sequence into the latter end of the performance. especially since the choreography itself would be murder in its intensity.
c.) this routine really stands in contrast to yuuri and viktor's exhibition performance with its classic partner moves and the soft music you hear so often in competition skates. yuri even breaks more than several competition rules (legal here since it's not a competition skate). this includes throwing his costume into the audience, the illegal interaction with otabek at the rink rail (he's technically not skating here) and finally his collapse onto the ice at the finale. this shows the rebel in his character.
d.) if you look at the choreography, his hand movements during step sequences are very much so "witness me". the gestures to his own body and posing is very ego driven. it's a lovely final performance for a character put onto the backburner throughout much of the series despite being the sometime deuteragonist/sometime antagonist.
favorite character, hands down.
