The heat on that race day was ridiculous. Like, dangerously ridiculous. However, the only way these athletes get paid is to compete even if competing can result in severe injuries to the body. In this case the injuries were dehydration and hyponatremia. Multiple athletes DNF'd because of the heat.

I’ve volunteered at events like this. Athletes who reach this point are often really out of it- they’re normally really nice, polite people (we see them all over town the day before and they’re super nice and chill), but at this point in time, they’re not firing on all cylinders.
In an Ironman, they have a specific “drop zone” for trash and bottles- if they drop within the zone, one of the “trash volunteers” is on hand to pick it up. I think there’s a penalty or something if they drop trash outside the zone. Dropping isn’t rude- it’s expected and that’s why we’re there! Most of the time, we didn’t even have proper cans- just volunteers with bags who ran in and grabbed the bottles and cups.

There’s also volunteers to help them strip out of their wetsuits, apply Vaseline to rashes, hand out hot broth if the temp drops, etc. If you can think it up, there’s a volunteer who does it. Most interesting station I’ve worked is the finish line, where you have to somehow get the timing chip off their ankle before they collapse. Most of them are completely shot at that point- they’ll throw up, faint, accidentally pee… I would run in just ahead of the medics, grab the chip, and get out of the way as fast as possible.
Always wanted to work the kayak slot for the swim, but that shift starts early!

I gave up racing for lifting over the past 5 years and I miss that different level of pain... feeling within an inch of your life to compete at something you love is a blessing.

Good for her to keep going. People who get upset shes not at peak politeness are hilarious, let the athletes prioritize focusing on their goals!

Elle a la force de courrir mais elle à l'irrespect de jeter ses bouteilles au sol!

That’s how people die in their low 30’s

When you're on this pain, you should remember you'de be dead without the volunteers ! Your race is over, at least be polite !

There’s pushing limits and then there’s stupidity. Hyperthermia and dehydration is no joke.

Don’t know about the pro contracts but I’d assume they sign a waiver so T100 (including staff I.e. first aid) aren’t liable / can’t be sued for death of athletes

Hey guys. This is a reminder that this is actually not motivating. It’s very stupid. Do not put yourself in the hospital for something like this. There will be another race next year.

Et les bénévoles ramassent les bouteilles c’est ça?

Don’t care how tired you are. Throwing your bottle like that is classless. Respect has no fatigue.

Kinda disrespectful at first glance. Didn't doing this sport gets you a free act-like-a-douchbag-all-day pass.
