Wow, as a person who is in the process of conversion. In a Chabad House, this is not my experience. And when I was a teenager, the music of the Matisyahu I used to know, was part of my journey to get to where I'm right now. I study fine Arts when I was in college. And I understand what this education does, to your ego.

What you miss, Matisyahu, not everything is about what we want. And in the end, is not about us. As you said in your song. "I will be light "

Chabad is very open .
Its important that as a person journeys to greater observance, that they take it step by step and dont burn their past behind them.
Those who integrate their personality, dreams and character into this process of growth have more lasting results.
Sadly, as in many things religion can be used as an escape from dealing with yourself.
Actually, in Tanya a big part of what is adressed there is about being a beinoni, a struggling human being and coming to terms with the fact that we are all on our own personal journeys.

I think his music was better when he was religious practicing.

Matisyahu was influence on me. I end up in Christianity. Similarly, once I got involved in Christian music, many Christians were all too happy to correct and criticize me. There’s a reason “preaching to the converted” is a common saying with a negative connotation. Matisyahu’s gifts are best shared with those who have not yet tasted such gifts…

This is just a small opinion from a great fan. I was turned onto your music by a group of hasidics from Muncie here in Belarus. And they thought you were number one. And then everything else and we are who we are and we know what we know and we believe what we believe. What I get out of the album youth is that you are not on drugs and you're not drunk and you believe with all of your heart and all of your might and I thought that was just so beautiful and still is. And I love your music and I understand you when you speak. But I let my beard grow just for me just because I like what I look like with a full beard and you can do whatever you want. God bless you for your music.

Blessings to Matis. Met him at one of his concerts in SF a few days after my daughter was born, during Hanukkah. Also I think it was the first concert after he shaved his beard. He's a special person, a beautiful soul. I loved him before and now, post-Chassidic. Glad he got out of that trap when he did. When religions go too extreme they can and often do turn into a cult. Yasher koach Matis! More power to you!

Why he left Chabad...I'd argue that he was never properly "Chabad" to begin with. Was too afraid of letting go of his ego, when Chabad chassidus works not on negating the ego as much as it does emphasizing the "super-ego", the true divine self, which learns over time (!!) to live with and in tandem with the "ego" self....Most people who "leave" ultra orthodox life feel themselves going to extreme too fast, when in fact there is no need for such a thing. They perceive the religious life as being a burden, and they are correct....very unfortunately, he did not meet the right people it seems.

Sounds like he went way too deep way too fast. Chassidus is a process, not a destination, regardless of its variety. Chabad brings many Jews back into the fold, and cannot be faulted for that. But like any group, affiliated individuals, even exalted leaders, can be short sighted. Had the Rebbe himself been mashpia to Matisyahu, Matisyahu would not have left, imho.

Join the Bnei Mikra movement! Leave chasidus behind, its either too extreme and concedes to adding to the Torah. Or its too mystical and is influenced by Shabbtai Tzvi and his followers who influenced the Arizal then later the Baal Shem Tov.
