English Story: Candide Chapter 19

Candide is the illegitimate nephew of a German baron. He grows up in the baron’s castle under the tutelage of the scholar Pangloss, who teaches him that this world is “the best of all possible worlds”, and everything that transpires in this world is for the best. Candide is all the more remarkable in the greatest books of European literature that its comedy is derived from some of the most tragic characters and situations imaginable.
