Ken Burns Civil War is probably the best documentary on the American Civil War from the roots of the conflict to its end. Sometimes you can find it on YouTube. Definitely too long to react to, but great for your own personal enjoyment and research if you want to know more about it.

Burnside was his actual name and supposedly that is where the term “sideburns” came from. They just switched his name around.

Not only did both sides have ironclads, but the Confederates used a submachine to sink a union ship in 1864.

Booth was actually cornered by the Pinkerton detective agency which was the infant secret service, in a barn. Booth fought back by firing multiple shots at the detectives. Booth didn’t survive as he was shot many times. His body was immediately photographed and put on public display as a grizzly reminder of the price of wrongdoing. The Pinkertons got the credit eventually becoming the secret service over time.

The Gettysburg battlefield is the most haunted area of the war. There is also a really great museum there.

Wars have always advanced medicine, example during the civil war a yankee doctor ran out of thread for stitches. He instructed an aide to shave the hairs from horses' tails and use them for stitches. Because the hairs were so stiff they had to boil them first for them to be soft enough to use. When done the doctor feared the infection rate among those with hair stitches to be much higher. To his surprise the reverse was true, the hair stitches were much, much lower than the thread ones. He finally figured it that it wasn't the hairs that made them better but the boiling. He then began boiling everything that would touch a patient wounds and infection rates fell thru floor. His practices were then adopted by the US Army and then the world.

The history of the ironclads is actually really interesting and led to the development of modern navel vessels. I highly recommend looking into the battle of The Monitor and the Merrimac. The uss monitor was such a crazy design for the time.

A little surprised there were no photographs of the number of young boys enlisted as drummers, messengers, officers' aides, cook staff, and even as front-line soldiers. Many were as young as Garren's age, enlisted from orphanages, street children in cities, and very poor families.

This was nice to see. Many photos we haven't seen yet. Unfortunately when they color the old photos it turns out worse than just looking at them in black and white.

Jono, you guys should see the Oversimplified of the Civil War. It's a quick overview. Also, there are documentaries about the ships used during the war, especiall such as The Monitor, and armored and under water ships.

My family has been in the US since it was a British colony in the 1600s and family members have fought in every war since the Revolutionary War. By researching my family history I have found that over 100 men in my family fought in the Civil War and were both Union and Confederates.

My father's family served on both sides of American Civil War with one of his and my ancestors helped Union Soldiers get back to Union North even though he was from the South (Rebels or Grey Coats), but his son was hardcore Southern Sympathizer. Older generations of my family told me that war was most brutal in American History because it was basically brother fighting brother on our soil. I hope that we never repeated it! HOPE!

The last surviving widow of a civil war soldier just died on December 16, 2020. Incredible, but true fact.

It's only been 159 years since the civil war ended, not over 200
