Civil war re-enactors are told ahead of time, which they'll be during a battle. Deceased, wounded, walking wounded, unharmed. Each one told individually.

I've seen some reenactments that use a hit detection system kinda like laser tag. It doesn't say anything, it just buzzes.

Id love to be in a Re-enactment just to be the point-man so when I eventually get shot I can scream ‘sanitator!’ like a banshee. (Sanitator was the German word for medic during World War Two for anyone who was wondering.)

Tactics battles are more just like airsoft, but without BBs and more realistic

It also depends if the group uses blanks or airsoft. Even though I doubt the second one ever being used for show battles.

You decide when you get hit
In my group we put a color in the powder. So when you shot and you saw the color you took a hit. You never knew when you would get "hit"

A friend does Civil War re-enactments. He says that the agreement is that during the battle, men whose birthday falls within a couple of specific dates will agree to die sometime during the volley of fire.
