We have investigated ourselves and reached the conclusion that we did nothing wrong (and that we are in fact, flawless).

The fact that they said seleen’s termination was “negligible” and then watched their whole company fall apart

I live in Japan right now and after working for a traditional Japanese company for almost 3 years, I can tell you that everything that she says is exactly the type of things that I experienced myself. It's already bad for JPs but as a foreigner or a woman, it's horrible. In her case she's likely (or treated as) both, because she lives in Canada. Japanese people will still call those who have Japanese ancestry but live in another country "not Japanese" and will treat them poorly.

The way that Japanese companies work is that it's all about loyalty rather than functionality or results. Yes, they want the money obviously, but if you are the top performer (like I was), it doesn't change anything. They'll have their favorites over you, or they'll treat you just like everyone else. That's why they wouldn't fund any of her promotions, and they definitely didn't like that she said that management wasn't going to pay for them. The level of exclusion that you'll get once the company turns on you is insane. They'll find ways to not invite you to work events (not small ones either, like New Year parties type of deal), but then talk loudly about how fun it was the day after. They'll lie about your contributions. They just try and pressure you to quit so hard, despite knowing that quitting essentially is half of a death sentence.

Starting over in a new company often means you start from the bottom in both pay and position, but as an idol, it's the death of your career. People who are put in that position often fall into such a huge depression that they...well, you know. Empathy is not something to expect from co-workers or management.

And then they wonder why the s***ide rate is so high....

I lived and worked in japan for 6-7 years. This is just business as usual for many japanese industries. I was a highschool teacher in japan for about 3 years and I ended up leaving because one of my students threw herself out of a window (fortunately she survived). I saw tons of bullying and stuff like that and when I brought it to the administration, they basically told me to mind my own business (they came back to bite them really hard after that from what I've heard). I had students who only learned English so that they could talk to somebody and according to other gaijin teachers, this is not uncommon at all. I've got some pretty crazy stories about my former students...

For the other three years, I worked as a programmer and while my company was not very exploitative, many of my co-workers told me some pretty insane stories about other companies in the industry. We are talking about legitimate human rights issues that would be difficult to hide here in the western world (some companies definitely still do stuff like that here, but it's just blatant over there).

Japan is an interesting country and it has a lot to offer but there is this existential nightmare constantly looming over you if you aren't ok with total homogeneous conformity. To be clear, my time in Japan was a net positive but like with any country, there are always going to be negatives. This was also almost a decade ago, some things certainly have changed since then for the better but there are still a few companies that refuse to budge on these issues. You don't even have to work at smaller companies, look at Nintendo, game freak, this company etc; all of them are very old-fashioned. Don't even get me started on the entertainment industry... If you really want to see how fake Japan can be, just watch some Japanese television. A lot of people assume it's all weird and wacky stuff but it's actually quite the opposite, normal Japanese TV is the most calculated and sanitized programming on the planet.

Just as a clarification on the "Japanese apostrophe" stuff, it was later proved to actually be TRUE that the last two posts from the Selen Tatsuki account were posted by management claiming to be Selen herself. The company stated that they removed access from her accounts the day before the post from her account mentioning the accident and being in the hospital, meaning she could not have made those posts...

This company has been a self reporting god in this situation, they haven't just been pouring the entire fuel can on the fire they built the fire themselves, threw a can of fuel onto it and then when that wasn't enough drove the entire fucking fuel tanker into the fire!

Taking the play buttons from them sends a very clear message, "You didn't earn this. We did."

Unfunfact: Elira and co started their stream the same time as Doki's *SCHEDULED* neopet stream, so you could watch her respond to it live. It's heartbreaking... she just wanted to move on.

Hi - 2D VTuber artist here and part time indie VTuber. This was a great video but wanted to clarify just one thing regarding why creators opt to work with these companies since it’s not even close to a parasitic issue or people would not ever opt for them nor would they be so mainstream.

Being a streamer and content creator now days is really hard to get your foot through the door, but harder to be a VTuber. One of my models takes me 5-6 months to create, and I’m indie so I still only charge $500-$1000. I make less than $1 an hour and still people get high quality models, it’s just a hobby for me. That being said I’m small potatoes and still $500-$1000 and some models go up to $3000+ when people pay themselves appropriately. It’s not unreasonable to spend the cost of a car on a custom 2D model because of the work that goes into it. Not everyone has the talent to make their own to quality, few people can afford that investment on Internet personality lottery. One of my clients spent $500 when I started and his model is amazing I adore him, his debut he had 50 viewers, almost 100 new followers, got affiliate in a week, but that’s still not even close to a career or job. We can hope that he keeps going but it already slowed down after his initial burst because of how oversaturated the community is.

That’s not to mention debut videos, lore animations, promotion art, marketing. Unlike a facecam creator taking a selfie, anything worth looking at in VTubersphere is new art which is constantly dumping art.

In comes big companies who you don’t have to invest in and break the bank to get started and keep going. Contracts are a nightmare, shady shit can happen, but getting signed is guaranteed long term success.

As an indie VTuber and artist I clearly opted to not join a company but it’s tough to be noticed at all. I don’t regret my choice to stick solo but I also get needing or wanting the security of a company.

I knew nothing about Vtubers until this blew up, but to put this into real life work terms this is the equivalent of suffering some form of workplace bullying to the point of having a mental breakdown resulting in acts of self harm, making a report to HR about this behavior and the resulting consequences with supporting documentation which includes personal medical information, then having your HR department share this documentation with the individuals who performed the bullying so they can verify the bullying claims. The individuals involved are then allowed to go public on social media to share this information to the entirety of the internet. In what world would any competent professional organisation think that this is acceptable behavior? Unbelievable.

When Vox said that he read it "thoroughly", I already knew they were fucked.
Edit: Yikes I didn't expect a twitter argument to spawn here

That image of the CEO is so funny to look at. They called their company "Anycolor" and decided to go with the black and white evil company background.

A few minor correction:

Dokibird is not her new persona, it was her previous account before joining Nijisanji

Niji's stock price dropped 16%: 10% after the termination announcement, and another 6% after yesterday's shitshow.

ALSO, no, not every VTuber company are this bad. IDOL Corp, Phase Connect, VShojo, VSpo and Hololive are examples of companies that care for, and nurture their members.

Nice compilation of the events Mutahar, thank you~

Extremely challenging situation for vtubers indeed. I'm standing in solidarity with you. It's evident that a massive change is required in how these multinational corporations deal with creators.

The fact that the CEO chose to apologize to the investors first before the fans and, more importantly no mention about Selen, just shows that all they care about is money.

bruh as someone in the community that covers this sorta stuff every week, its wild seeing it breach containment like this - you know a company has messed up when literally the entire internet, even non vtuber fans, actually agree with each other for once about how how screwed up a situation is

thanks for talking about this muta

I would recommend looking into the Zaion situation, she revealed a crap ton of stuff about the company that ended up being true. Also there are clips of former Niji talents being really happy/talking about how great their current company's management is. I never have really been into Njisanji but when I saw those two debut in their new agency and saw them talking about something as minor as it just seemed really damning to me that Niji has some awful management. There were also clips about one of the talents being in a lot of tax/debt trouble and Niji offered absolutely no help regarding it and he got help from the CEO of his current company instead for months which is why he decided to join them.
