The Lighthouse Movie Foghorn Sound Effect

Different sort of video than I normally put up but I love this movie and I really love this sound effect so I went through and sampled the best horns from it. I'd love to have this effect alone, but there's no scene without some background noise and unfortunately you can't really edit it out without losing fidelity.

Foghorns are absolutely the creepiest sound you can hear by the sea in bad weather.

I think the foghorn itself could almost be considered a character. It really stuck with me after watching the movie it just sets the entire tone and the amazing thing is that thats what those horns actually sound like its not with some exaggerated effect to make it seem eerie, it just is.

Around the Lizard Point of Cornwall, UK, lighthouses still have Victorian-era horns that make this sound.

There is something about this sound that is terrifying. It is like an alarm warning you that something bad is going to happen, it represents danger and sets a horrifying atmosphere as if someone is about to die or that SOMETHING is tracking you down and the more you hear this sound, the closer it gets to you.

Fun fact: This is actually a fog siren! The difference between a fog horn and a fog siren is that a fog horn has a diaphragm wich is a big metal disk that vibrates. But a fog siren uses a big metal disk that has holes that chops up the air that makes the sound. It works kinda like a normal siren except it uses steam or high pressured air instead of a electric motor. You can tell its a fog siren because of the very quick windup.

If we are to go with the “Purgatory” theory, I would assume the foghorn is symbolizing Gabriel’s Horn, sounding every now and then in Purgatory, signalling the resurrection of the dead. But again, this movie is so versatile you can use it as a symbol for anything really. Masterpiece

And with the deep amd enchanting sounds of darkness and mystical energy. The great towering demon out on the water opened his wings and his glowing red eyes illuminated in the pale and haunting fog! This is the most doom metal sound ever!

I wonder if part of the directors inspiration for this was Ray Bradbury's The Foghorn? It's a short story about a foghorn that drives a dinosaur mad with anguish since the sound makes it think there is still another left in the world like it, and when, after a few times visiting it finally realises what it is it goes back and smashes itself against the lighthouse causing the structures ruin and finally silencing the maddening sound.
