I remember as kids we would go down to the Kingston pier next to the ferry dock and we would catch these huge Dungeness crabs in shallow water. Basically one of us would go into the water and the other would be up on the dock guiding us to the crab. And we used are hands to pluck them out of the water. It seemed a lot of female were in these areas maybe laying their eggs but eventually we would find a couple massive males. I remember one day we each caught 2 big dungeness each but before we did that we caught a king salmon at the very same dock when we reeled him in he was stuffed to the gills with those little minnow fish. We filleted the salmon right there on the dock got it cleaned out before any worms could move in put it on ice. I’ll never forget that day we ran home with our two coolers to show our dads what we caught. Even they were super impressed and they did their fair share of fishing. That night both our families had a nice outdoor meal of crab and salmon. Amazing how 1 summer day can be so burned into my memory. Definitely a golden memory I’ll probably never forget. Probably because how impressed our dads were when we showed them and how they were telling everyone about this huge king salmon we caught off the pier. Well I caught it but I never took credit we took turns and it just happened to be my turn to cast.

When I was stationed on Whidbey Island we used to go crabbing all the time, on the train tracks in Anacortis. That was in the early 80's.

My uncle Tony free dives off the Deception Pass Bridge and catches those crabs with his bare hands and sells em to tourists for $3.00 a pop.

When I was in my 20s.(50 yrs ago). We would wade out with a lantern ant a bucket in to the dungeness flats at very low tide..and pick up crab from the seaweed ...I loved growing up in Sequim.

Man, I remember going crabbing with my brother on his crestliner about 10 years ago. We would crab over parts of the sound for Dungeness and Red Rock crab. If memory serves me correctly, we would launch off Redondo, set off some traps whithin the vicinity, then explore the sound. I think the farthest stop for us was the Suquamish docks. My brothers bait of choice would usually be between a frozen fish head, canned tuna, or even a turkey leg. We'd usually catch around 8-10 mix of both. I forget what the legal amount is that we could keep as it has been a long time. Nontheless, Great times.
