Parents name their children based off of themselves or what they think their children will like, so maybe sometimes they are correct and that leads to them having the following cutie mark. In the case of Diamond Tiara, her father it Filthy Rich, literally, maybe he assumed she would be royalty and she simply has her crown as a toy prop but since they get cutie marks at such a young age, that IS a cherished item given to her currently, so it would only make sense for her to get that cutie mark.

i think its based on feeling!! like, a pony has a daughter, and she just *knows* what her name should be! there is probably also a study on it in equestria, and i bet twilight is interested in the correlation as well! that is what i think is going on, the parents are subconsciously influenced by the magic of the universe, the same magic that gives cutie marks ^^

Celestia naming the babies doesn't make sense because in season 4 episode 12 Pinkie Pride. the Cakes say "Having so much fun as we chose Pound and Pumpkin's names!" which implies the parents name the foals

In the video he shows an example that not all named and cutie marks match up, one of these examples being granny smith, but the cutie mark does match up. The cute mark is apple pie, and granny smith is a type of apple, so not only does it match up with the cutie mark, its also a smart thing to name a character who is a grandmother. I also noticed how granny smiths skin(?) (fur, i guess) is a green color, just like granny smith apples.

My theory is that the names impact the future in a butterfly effect of sorts, and it just so happends that ponies tend to base their life and find destenies around already given names

What if ponies just subconsciously try to live up to their names? It could literally be that their names are kind of random but they try to subconsciously live up to their name and base their personality around it.

i think that their names change once tehy get their cutie mark, because in the episode where the applefamily (exept for granny smith) try to find out (SPOILERS!) how their half pear and what happend to their paents, and ms cake said "Back when i was pink swirl" proving that they had diffrent names that swapped once they got their cutiemark, but maybe it was just a tradition in the cakes fanily.
