I've often thought about this as well, and I've made my conclusions, or really lack there of; but if I could ask you one question, it would be this:

How much effect does the federal reserve and the subsequent dropping of the gold standard and adoption of fiat currency have on these 2 "separate" terms and their associated indicators like GDP?

(I think it's all just political spin doctor terminologies in case I haven't made that evident, but I subbed to your page. Keep up the good work!)
