Показать описание
Walking through the historic part of Vasilyevsky Island (also known as Basil's Island) in St Petersburg, Russia. It is one of the four districts of St. Petersburg that is considered to be a part of the historic city center.
By the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, nearly all major scientific and educational institutions were concentrated on Vasilyevsky Island—including the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Arts, the Mining Institute, St. Petersburg State University, and others.
Vasilyevsky Island is also home to numerous architectural landmarks, including the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, the Rostral Columns, the St. Petersburg Stock Exchange, the Palace Bridge, the Neva River Embankment, the 3,500-year-old Egyptian Sphinxes, the Blagoveshchensky Bridge, the Vasileostrovsky Market, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, and St. Catherine’s Cathedral.
Vasilyevsky Island has also long hosted an extensive industrial sector, featuring major facilities such as the Baltic Shipyard, the commercial Sea Port, the historic Siemens & Halske electrical plant (established in 1853), Russia's pioneering cable factory, and numerous other industrial enterprises.
St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, founded in 1703 by Emperor Peter The Great (aka Peter I). It was a capital city of Russian Empire in the period from 1712 to 1918.
In the Soviet days, St Petersburg was renamed to Leningrad.
St Petersburg is located 680 km northwest of Moscow.
Here on the "All of Russia'" channel, I explore places not just inside but also travel all over Russia outside Moscow.
