"Pãrinteasca dimãndari" (The advice of our forefathers) is the anthem of the Aromanians, written by Constantin Belemace in 1888 in Bucharest.

Aromanians are a branch of Eastern Latinity, along with Daco-Romanians, Megleno-Romanians and Istro-Romanians. The origin of the Aromanians is disputed, but one point of agreement among all historians, ethnologists, linguists and philologists is that the Daco-Romanians, the Megleno-Romanians and the Istro-Romanians are descended from the Proto-Romanians.
More about Proto-Romanians:

They live south of the Danube, in the Balkans (Dobruja region, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and North Macedonia), their number is not known exactly, but it is estimated to be around 250k Aromanians. They are also known as Vlachs from the Balkans.

Aromânii sunt o ramură a latinității răsăritene, alături de daco-românii, meglenoromânii și istro-românii. Originea aromânilor este disputată, dar un punct de acord între toți istoricii, etnologii, lingviștii și filologii este că dacoromânii, meglenoromânii și istroromânii sunt descendenți din protoromâni.

In 2010 am avut fericita ocazie sa particip de Sta Marie, la Moscopole, la prima intilnire a aromanilor de pretutindeni. Pina la Moscopole am vizitat insa locurile unde s-au nascut bunicii mei: Crusova lui Pitu Guli unde s-a nascut papu, contemporan cu el, si Molovistea lui Constantin Belimace unde s-a nascut maia, contemporana cu el. In Moloviste am cumparat de la manastirea (inchisa in prezent) Sveta Petka (Sfanta Parascheva) un CD aparut cu ocazia implinirii a 120 de ani de la compunerea Parintestii Dimandari - interpretata in trei variante: orchestra si cor, a capella si orchestral. Ultima varianta, cum am scris in dese rinduri, parca ridica mortii din morminte si ii trimite la lupta.

Aromâna pastrat etã din latinul aetas, care in româna a fost inlocuit cu slavicul vreme, fumelja e tot mostenit din latina pe cand in româna e imprumut; bãshari din latina basiare - a saruta, in româna a fost inlocuit cu sarutare (din latina salutare) pentru ca suna asemanator cu cuvântul bãsire (din lat vissire)

Even though this anthem was written by a Romanianised Aromanian and I think Aromanians are Greeks (their historical homeland is Pindus after all and all theories of a proposed Romanodacian immigration have been debunked) I still like it. Aromanians must keep their Ancient Language alive, even if its Romance and not Greek. With it they were fierce and great warriors of the Byzantine Empire and then the Modern Greek state, like their Epirot ancestors of Old and all other Epirotes. Love to all Aromanians, who think of themselves as Greek or Not. ❤

Dimitrie Bolintineanu a fost poet român, romancier, călător, diplomat, om politic, participant la Revoluția de la 1848.
În versuri de o perfectă corectitudine, din care răzbate multă simțire și o mare iubire de țară, el dezvoltă diferite subiecte istorice, aflate în cronicari, mai ales la Neculce, sau imaginare.
Acestea l- au făcut popular și multe din cugetările exprimate au devenit niște maxime des întrebuințate :
* a scos în evidență caracterul nobil al domnitorului Mircea cel Bătrăn, care nu s-a pretat să încheie tratate de pace necuviincioase și păguboase, în numele poporului pe care avea datoria de al cârmui cu dreptate;
* a acuzat pe cei care acceptau postura de unelte ale tiranilor :

" Cei ce rabdă jugul și-a trăi mai vor
Merită să-l poarte, spre rușinea lor !"
* a făcut cea mai frumoasă urare pentru patria sa :

" Viitor de aur țara noastră are
Și prevăd prin secoli a ei înălțare."

* a scos la iveală testamentul lui Ștefan cel Mare, mushatinul, care zicea că mai bine țara s-ar face un mormânt, decât neamul să trăiască în robie.

2. În fine, scrie poezia " Muma lui Ștefan cel Mare" :

Pe o stâncă neagrâ, într-un vechi castel,
Unde cură-n poale un râu mititel, (..)
Un orologiu sună noaptea jumătate.
În castel în poartă oare cine bate ?
- " Eu sunt, bună maică, fiul tău dorit;
Eu, și de la oaste mă întorc rănit. (.)
Dar, deschideți poarta...Turcii mă-nconjor...
Vântul suflă rece...Rănile mă dor!"

- "Ce spui, tu, străine?Ștefan e departe;

Eu sunt a sa mumă; el e fiul meu;
De ești tu acela, nu-ți sunt mumă eu!
Însă dacă cerul, vrând să- ngreuneze
Anii vieții mele și să mă întristeze,
Nobilul tău suflet astfel l-a schimbat;

Dacă tu ești Ștefan cu adevărat,
Apoi tu aice fără biruință

(I'll write this in english for aromanians that dont speak aromanian and dont understand romanian)
As a romanian from Dobrogea region (home of Romanians & Aromanians) I see many confused romanians from other regions and aromanians from other countries here so let me clarify a few things that both groups of people get confused from:

1. (for Romanians)... We call aromanians "machidoni" (the most-used term commonly known over all romania) because by the time Romania got Dobruja, the romanians were like 1/3 of the population and the rest were Bulgarians Turks Tatars etc. so king Ferdinand in agreement with other Balkan countries, created a mass-immigration of aromanians in Dobruja (declaring it "home of Aromanians") to make romanians a majority in the region. The most aromanians came from Macedonia Region in Greece and bcs of that they started to call them "machidoni"

2. (for Romanians)... just because you call them "machidoni" doesn't mean they are the same as North Macedonians or the Macedonians from Greece. For more information about North Macedonians and Macedonia from Greece, there are a lot of Youtube videos that explain this, but that is a completely different story.

3. (for Aromanians/Romanians)... Aromanians are also called Vlahi in their countries where they live outside Romania in Balkan. Vlahs are the ones that created the principality of Wallachia (Vlahia/Tara Romaneasca), 1 of the 3 great principalities that Romania is made of. The aromanians are basically the vlachs stayed outside Wallachia by the time it was created.

4. (for Aromanians/Romanians)... The aromanian language is basically old-romanian with little influences from other balkan countries. Aromanians couldn't upgrade their language like romanians did because they didn't have language teachers like romanians did in late 19th to 20th century and were even opressed by the countries where they lived when someone tried that (search for Haralambie Balamaci case, for example) so they had to learn aromanian "from parent to son" but what can a son learn when the parent himself didnt had a proper teacher in those times.

Conclusion: Aromanians are basically romanians and romanian government has no interest to promote this, they are more concerned with Transylvania bcs of Hungary and Moldova bcs of Russia :)

The Walloons of Belgium.

The Italians (Welsch in Swiss German for Italian-speakers).

The Vlachs of the Balkans and Carpathians.

Application to Non-Romance Speakers:
While "Vlach" primarily referred to Romance-speaking populations (such as Romanians, Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians, and Istro-Romanians), it was sometimes extended to other groups due to:

Geographical Association: In the Balkans, some Slavic-speaking pastoralists living near Vlachs were called "Vlachs" due to similar lifestyles.

Cultural Perception: German and Slavic chroniclers sometimes labeled semi-nomadic or mountain-dwelling groups as "Vlachs" regardless of language.

Political Context: In medieval Hungary, "Oláh" referred to Romanian-speakers, but the term could be stretched to include assimilated groups.

Misapplications and Confusions:
Slavic-Speaking "Vlachs": In some cases, South Slavs (especially in Bosnia, Dalmatia, and Serbia) with pastoral traditions were called "Vlachs" even if they spoke Slavic languages.

German Sources: Some medieval German texts (e.g., about Transylvania or the Balkans) might have used "Walach" imprecisely, mixing ethnic and social classifications.

Conclusion:
The Germans did not invent the term "Vlach" but inherited and adapted it from earlier Germanic usage. While it primarily denoted Romance-speaking populations, its application to non-Romance speakers happened due to cultural, geographic, or political factors—not because of linguistic confusion alone.
