It's also kind of cute with the way it tries to use its tiny wings to fly up into the air only to land back on the ground in a disappointing flop.

"the best detail about the asylum demon-"
massive dumptruck?
"-is his crown of bone."
...right, yeah.

Other games: "here's a tutorial to get a feel first"

Dark souls: "hear take this broken sword and go fuck up that big ass demon"

The Asylum Demon also sets the aesthetic tone for the rest of the game, combining western dark fantasy with an overwhelmingly dreary tone, but with a hint of self-aware absurdity to balance things out. It's the exact tone you'll find in Berserk, though that should've come as a surprise.

Beyond the game beginning and ending with the death of a king, it begins and ends with the death of a hollow

I think this scene also really helps set the tone for the game since Dark Souls 1 is paced like a comedy. The game literally dropping you into a boss fight is really funny, especially when you watch it happen to someone else for the first time. It's classic setup and payoff. I think this is the biggest unsung strength of the game that the rest of them get wrong. Its story is a tragedy but its gameplay is a comedy.

The asylum demon is a great teaching tool, but people sleep on how effectively the gargoyles teach you the importance of staggers and playing with the free-cam. If you lock on to one of them and try to wail away with the longsword you're probably gonna get thrashed, but if you learn to claw grip and come back with the battle axe that staggers much easier, you'll likely have a much easier time

I like that before it jumps down to greet you it slammed Oscar through the roof of the prison and basically killed him

Flashback to the first time I tried dark souls: I didn't realize I was supposed to go past the asylum demon, so I tried to beat it with just the hilt and no estus, shield.. Needless to say after a couple of times I quit and told myself dark souls is impossible. Fast forward a couple of weeks when I see a video of a guy just running past him. I felt so stupid..

Please do these for Monster Hunter designs, I would love to see that! If and when you have the time and inclination, of course. I think it would fit quite well, but perhaps it would be more difficult than it seems from an outsider's perspective.

It's a bit sad they took him his uniqueness by reusing this model twice in the game. But meeting him the first time is still very memorable.

Finally someone that loves this Boss Fight as much as I do. Lovely design. Combine it with Spear of the Church faction in Ds3 you have an Evolve killer just from possibly one fraction of the Multiplayer

I would have also mentioned how when you first meet him, he leaps from the air and creates a massive attack as he plunges down.

Then when you finish gathering stuff you return with a similar plunging attack from above. Which in a way teaches you that you and the enemies will play by the same rules.
If an enemy shrugs off your strikes without being staggered, there will be a way for you to do it too, for example.

Oh, that's big smart. I was already wondering what comes when you are out of champions to review.
