Agriculture is a source of desertification often overlooked, easily fixable. The other thing is you don't wanna fight the desert, you wanna work with the water cycles and spot where moisture / rain comes from and where it goes, start allowing or developping vegetation where it goes, than it will spread and increase humidity in surrounding areas. There's many exemples of deserts regrown and people that specialize in those areas, there's probably a couple dozens worldwide that are really efficient and that can explain what's going on, I don't have their names in mind but you can find them.
