I Was Hit By A Homebuyers SCAM - Friday Afternoon Fraud
Показать описание
I was recently hit by a conveyancing scam known as Friday Afternoon Fraud.
This scam works when your email gets hacked so your activity around buying a house (or making another big purchase) is monitored. The scammers then attempt to impersonate your solicitor and ask you to send them your house deposit. This can be devastating and cost you tens of thousands of your hard-earned money you have saved to buy a new home.
Protect yourself by:
- Enabling two-factor authorisation on your emails
- Know the process and when you will need to send money
- Know your solicitors will never change bank details
- When you need to make a large payment, speak to them on the phone or go into the office
- Consider sending a smaller test amount before you send
- Be aware that if the tone of the email changes, or if there are typos or different signatures, it may be a scam
- Check the exact email address if you believe it’s a scam
If you get an email like this, inform your solicitor immediately and report it to ActionFraud.
If you send money in a scam like this, contact your bank and the police as soon as you realise.
(sorry if the audio is quieter than other videos, I'm not sure what happened there but it's super annoying I know!)
