I once made fun of my mum's English in a petty fight and I still feel guilty. It's been 10 whole years.

This broke my heart. ❤️❤️ I'm glad you see the situation differently now.

I don’t remember doing this but apparently when me and my brother were younger we used to make fun of the way our mom read stories to us because she didn’t pronounce words properly due to the fact that she was a Filipino immigrant, it breaks my heart that we ever said that stuff to her and after that I never heard her read a story to me as a kid :(

Some children can be such jerks sometimes. I sure he has forgotten and forgiven you. I suspect your dad can now pronounce a few words you haven't heard of with perfect enunciation!🙂

I did the same to my mother and she has the same reaction that your dad did...she woke up five am in the morning every day to improve her English once I told her she wasn’t qualified to be my private tutor.

My belated mother was the first person to instill a deep love of learning in me.

Your dad is amazing! It’s always crazy to look back and see things for what they really were. I always wonder...what I will think of current me a little down the line.

This made me cry but also made me realize that kids sometimes unconsciously hurt their parents.

I once told ppl who commenting on someone’s accent to ask themselves if they could even learn another language. English is important but other languages are also important. Ppl who are multilingual don’t comment negatively on others’ accent or pronunciation bcos they know learning another language can be very difficult.

I can relate so much. I had a similar experience when my dad tried to help me with math. I was like 12 but I was thinking the same thing. I think of that time and it makes me cry. I wasn't even trying to understand him because I wanted him to become better at swedish and speak it as well as my mum. It's now being an adult that I can see how my actions could make him feel less than. For years I was mad he never learned to say stuff grammatically correct. But finally I can better understand him and imagine how he might be experiencing these language difficulties. It's easy to think someone should know the language of a country they move to perfectly rather than trying to understand their perspectives. Them trying to learn and adapt to a whole other place while you yourself get to grow up there and learn in school, simply being better equipped from the start. I'm just glad I'm not as angry like I used to be as a kid.

My mum taught me english even though she struggles with it. Years later now, even though mine isn't that good, I've won some certificates in english writing and my mum was always the happiest!

My mother used to yell at me every time I asked for help on homework and aftee a few months of non stop yelling I just gave up on asking for help, I'm always afraid of asking for help, especially in the class room, so your a very lucky person! I'm glad you came out to be an amazing person!

Your father is so nice and diligent! If only I had that much determination to learn new words as him.

They only want us to be our best selves. Glad she sees it differently now.

Children don't know any better, but seeing your dad working hard to be able to relate to you better surely set an example for you to be able to understand him better. He truly led by example which is key to good parenting

I feel like kids who grew up in a country different from their parents origin light forget that their parents actually left everything behind, most in hope of a better future💜

My dad is like this but he grew up appalachian. I was and still am fiercely protective of anyone that questions him. I've fought my siblings, friends and boyfriends over this.
