This is a good overview but it's probably worth noting that most phonemes aren't really necessary The basis of most lip sync is mouth open & mouth closed. Look at any puppet animation (e.g. The Muppets). We totally buy into the Muppets talking and all they have is mouth open and mouth closed. The problem with phonemes is that we tend to over analyze the mouth shape when doing lip sync animation. And that results in an over articulated and unnatural looking animation. Instead, start with mouth open and mouth closed. Then only add in the main shapes like E, O and M on top of the mouth open/closed animation. This is the basic technique we taught at the Digital Animation & Visual Effects School and it worked extremely well.

To an extra touch of realism, make sure to animate the nose as well. When we talk, it follows our mouth movements.

well sorry, but those lips don't move, they snap into place with every frame, it looks quite... bad, concept is ok, but would require hours to do for sound longer than that

Lets be honest, that process doesnt take 5 minutes, it’d take hours even days for noob like me. Please dont get mixed up between your video duration and time needed in real process

It's more like 5 hours, but thanks, I guess.

Alright so it's like a "Learn in 5 minutes what to do" rather than "Make in 5 min" :D

I am just starting to explore blender, and I am wondering if there can be a feature like Adobe character animator where you create the mouth shapes like this but it will process the audio looking for each sound and generate the proper keyframes which you can edit later

Finally face movements become very easy as compare to older versions of blender
Thx #blender team

Your videos are usually great... I'm not sure what happened with this one. Maybe it's just that I was confused by the title and was expecting some more content about a "lip sync rig" and less about shapekeys and manually animating them to match audio.

Hi, I like your content, but this video is not good. This process takes much more than five minutes, and the end result you got is pretty bad. It does not show the potential of the technique or clarify many details about the most critical parts of the process.

U have to remeber each mouth shape flows into the next one i would recommend animating a rigged character with bones for each muscle and also remeber that the mouth pulls in the cheak and nose it doesn't stretch the skin. Its pretty hard to call this lip sync

I finally managed to make a simple grease pencil mouth rig (tutorial on my channel) it might even work on a 3D mouth and can be auto lip-synced using the Rhubarb addon.

SouthernShotty: Let's get some crappy audio. *opens ducky3D*

Ducky3D: Hmmm... Let me right that one down...
