Farm & Homestead Education - The UGLY Truth!

There's a lot of content, information, conferences and classes out there to learn about homesteading and farming from. But which ones are the best?

And yes, we do watch Just A Few Acres Farm.

So you are mad that people are giving free information and not charging people like you are doing and it is cutting into your business

I appreciate the perspective. There are so many people getting started with the goal of being an influencer.

Also at the same time, I’ve had people beg to help and learn how to process broilers, when the only education I had was a Joel Salatin YouTube video and one round of 25 chickens. I let them know I was also very green, but they wanted in anyways. I’m glad I didn’t decline, because all these people have continued raising their own food every year since.

Always look for the YouTube videos, very educational. Have learned a great deal from Sandra and you. Making some significant changes from New York to West Virginia in next 3 months. Going to start my own homestead. Wish me luck

Good advice. For some younger folks, they might go to this class you described because they were of a similar age and demographic. I guess it’s more of a social thing. Getting good advice and instruction saves people from making unnecessary mistakes. Those other people will need to get their hearts blessed!

I disagree. Some people want to get their feet wet and cannot afford $1000's of dollars in classes. Or take a week off work. I learned all i needed to learn about butchering chickens watching 1 YT video with Joel Salitin. Me and my neighbor built a scalder and a plucker by yt videos. I have butchered birds since 2021, about 100 a yr. I would gladly teach a class to help someone grow and harvest their own food. Am i the most knowledgable, no but i try and learn every time. How do you think our fore fathers taught each other? They taught their communites. Learning doesnt have to be taught by the best and brightess. I dont need to travel across the country and pay thousands for a class if i can get that knowledge the next county over for $50. Its a start. Do you think if you went to one of those classes you wouldnt learn anything? You will gather some knowledge if anything what not to do. Learning is a process. Cant always learn from the best right out of the gate.

OK, so what I'm piecing together is that there are homesteaders in your area that are starting to host classes in processing meat birds.
Let's face it, the process is relatively a simple one especially with the proper equipment and keeping things clean and the proper temp. Heck when I learned how to process chickens we had to read instructions in a book as You Tube wasn't a thing.
It will be just fine and it's a great way for like minded folks to get together and learn.

The bottom line is the first principles of any field is always the starting point and can be accessed with a library card. After a year or so you'll be in a better position to evaluate educational options. In my opinion this is a good approach. 🌞

You are right, there is a huge difference between an education and a usable education. Millions have completed a useless 4-year university. So too, thousands have now completed weeks of "training" and conferences which benefits nothing but the pockets of others. Good point, Chuck.

Awesome Information. I am a firm believer on hands-on. training If I
lived closer I would jump to the opportunity to process chickens with Sandra. Thanks for the video

Your evaluation makes a lot of sense, Chuck. I've never been a supporter of the "watch one, do one, teach one" school of thought. Getting education and then practicing over time or better still, serving as an apprentice, is a way better approach. I don't want to learn from someone that is only a couple of pages in the manual ahead of me...

Take care and God Bless.

A good class can be invaluable to learning farming if you don’t know . Sadly for an example are the ones who clickbait with astronomical returns on little investment and then offer classes, ex growing vegetables, and then charge a reduced intro of 3200$ and then sell every tool under the sun to get you going. This video is correct in saying vet who you enroll in and get some referrals and work hard💪🇺🇸

I hear ya most in the homestead space are grifters trying to sell the idea versus living the legit lifestyle.

In the age of social media and youtube, there are grifters everywhere. People need to recognize what is entertainment and what is tangible educational content.

I’ve raised my first batch of meat birds last year and been raising layers turkeys and ducks since like 2018 I think it was and I’m self educated. I’m planning on getting a batch of barred rocks hatched out for my meat this year, I have them for eggs so I figured I’d grow them out for about 5 months and butcher them instead of buying broilers this year I feel like I’d save money raising them compared to broilers in the long run

Don’t pay for education folks. Ask enough questions and the kind ones will answer for the greater good <3
