It would be an understatement to say that I was profoundly affected by SCARBOROUGH by Catherine Hernandez. I hope you enjoy my review.

The world breaks my heart. I just don't understand how people don't know that if they do good, good things will come to them. The cruelty and the randomness of the world are stunning. So Scarborough sounds wonderful and scarring at the same time. But thank you for expressing yourself so well.

This book sounds heavy but amazing.
I think of these things every time someone cuts me off or does something that steps all over common courtesy. Their spouse could have just died, or maybe they were told they were worthless all their lives by those that were suppose to show them love. Some say, No, often times those people are just short sighted and selfish. Maybe, but it had to start somewhere, right? No one *wants* to be an a-hole or deemed a failure by society. This video may seem depressing, but the magical thing of it all is that even with all this, many people *still* endure and spread kindness even as they are being brought down. It’s easy to do the right thing in ideal situations, but that person that was just beaten down where others have fallen to sorrow, they muster that inner will to perpetuate kindness or even the will to give tomorrow a chance.

first of all thank you for this first take review, I almost went on Amazon to buy this book myself, but then while searching for it and listening to you, while you elaborated on it, I stopped and remembered this one particular book called “all children are home” and instantly, the part of the story that fcked me up, I mean there is something in that story that bothed me for weeks came up and it is also about empathy, and choosing not to judge but to understand, very similar ideas, from what I can tell, to your description of your book. But at the end of it all
“doing “good” towards other don’t mean “good” is needed, or it’s just isn’t enough to even cover all the crazy horror that someone lives in, or that good will come back to you, or will it happen at all, or may be your “good” just isn’t all that “good by nature.

I don’t know, by the way that’s not what author tried to say in it, but my imagination, and current life predicament shaped out. So may be after I digest this “question of the day”, I ll give your book a try, but thank you much !!

It's weird that you don't include personal choices in your list of what makes a person. That is what makes you who you are more than anything else. As a person who had zero privilege and a very difficult youth and childhood, the choices I made and the encouragement of one teacher and one boss during that time is what made me who I am. I could have easily gone in the opposite direction. I don't believe people are inherently good. My own experience as a child robbed me of that notion. So few people have real compassion. Sure, people feel sorry for other people, but you have to make a genuine effort to make a genuine difference in another person's life. It's not enough to just say "do better" or "you got this." And some people are never going to make the right choices, no matter how much help they receive. I know people who have literally been murdered by people who gave very real help to the person who ended up murdering them. It's nice to think we are all just fine as we are, but every one of us could be better if we make an effort, especially if we are aware of the fact that we are ALL flawed creatures who should be given the benefit of the doubt, but not to excuse terrible choices, especially when they affect others in negative ways. Anyway, glad you liked the book. I'm just gonna go finish Middlemarch.
