Hummingbirds are some of the most remarkable animals on the planet. The way that they fly is extraordinary, and very different from the way that birds normally fly. And being such odd birds, it sure does make you wonder, how do they fit in with the other birds? What are they related to? Well the answer came as quite a surprise!

I did part of my PhD on the phylogeny of this group. One of the most amazing dinosaur clades for sure! Their phylogeny has actually been quite troublesome to sort out, but in recent years it looks like we've finally more or less settled on the tree seen in this video. They also have a surprisingly good fossil record, at least more so than you'd expect from a bunch of small, delicate birds!

I'd add also that, as their name suggests (and many photos of them show), treeswifts differ from true swifts in that they do often perch (and nest) in trees.

Hummingbirds are the only birds who will fly to me to demand I refill their feeder. Owls are the only birds who have scared me by flying by me and me not hearing them. So an owl- hummingbird seems terrifying to me.
