Saturday evening drive around Johannesburg South Africa, known as the City of Gold for its mineral rich surroundings, home to large-scale gold and diamond trades. If you're in Cape Town, don't forget to take an inexpensive 1 hour flight to Johannesburg! South Africans' speak English, Afrikaans (a language of southern Africa, derived from the form of Dutch brought to the Cape by Protestant settlers in the 17th century, and an official language of South Africa), Xhosa, and Zulu. Pro Tip. Write down 10 basic phrases from each language in your mobile phone note pad. It makes traveling so much easier. The locals always appreciate talking with someone who takes the time to learn a few phrases in their language.
Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city and capital of Gauteng province, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. - Google

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa, classified as a megacity, and is one of the 100 largest urban areas in the world. According to Demographia, the Johannesburg-Pretoria urban area (combined because of strong transport links that make commuting feasible) is the 26th-largest in the world, with 14,167,000 inhabitants. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa. Most of the major South African companies and banks have their head offices in Johannesburg. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade. It was one of the host cities of the official tournament of the 2010 FIFA World Cup – and it hosted the final.

The city was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm. Due to the extremely large gold deposit found along the Witwatersrand, within ten years, the population had grown to 100,000 inhabitants.

A separate city from the late 1970s until 1994, Soweto is now part of Johannesburg. Originally an acronym for "South-Western Townships", Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg, populated mostly by native African workers from the gold mining industry.

The metropolis is an alpha global city as listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. In 2019, the population of the city of Johannesburg was 5,635,127, making it the most populous city in South Africa. In the same year, the population of Johannesburg's urban agglomeration was put at 8,000,000. Land area of the municipal city (1,645 km2 or 635 sq mi) is large in comparison with those of other major cities, resulting in a moderate population density of 2,364 per square kilometre (6,120/sq mi).

When Mum and I stayed in Joburg for a few days in 2013, she said the city centre reminded her of Melbourne in the ‘70’s! So brown and old.
But we both agreed the other day that Joburg is our favourite South African city. Cape Town has the looks, but Joburg has the personality!

There is something melancholic and yet beautiful about this place. It look so familiar even though I've never been.

Please drive through Sandton. A lot of disinvestment has happened in the CBD and most companies have moved their headquarters to Sandton. Mostly the banks are still in the CBD. Your videos are awesome!

Years upon years of corruption and incompetence of cANCer's government has left the once mighty Johannesburg dilapidated. Old buildings, filthy streets and crime have become Jo'burg's unpleasant hallmarks. I reckon, Cape Town is the most beautiful and clean city in South Africa because it is managed by competent people.

I can't believe that Cape Town is located in the same country as Johannesburg that you filmed this time. South Africa is just unique.

There is a strange dystopia in this part of Joburg. The cars look new, they drive in their lane, all the traffic lights work, people dress well. But on the contrary, the buildings look neglected, it is not very dirty but it is not an example of cleanliness either. It's not terrible, but it's not great either. It could be solved with a good municipal policy, but I understand that this is difficult when work is scarce.

Interesting city for sure! Cape Town's one of the most gorgeous cities on Earth, Johannesburg doesn't look too bad! It's lovely to hear pedestrians chatting about, instead of staring at their phones. However, cleanliness needs to improve asap.

Looks like the south Bronx in the 1980's. Or certain parts of Detroit. When you see abandoned Highrise office buildings you know it's bad.

Johannesburg is beautiful! It's also pretty dangerous though. Especially when you're taking a walk. Marshalltown is probably the safest section in Johannesburg.

Lived and worked in Jo'burg 72 - 74, then again in 1977 and 1990. Used to like the place and its energy ... but wow, it has changed.

What happened to Joburg, ? It used to be very clean them years when I resided there. What happened to the trucks that used to scrub the roads every morning?

Thank you for this insight on South Africa and Johannesburg. The City is big and not as busy as I would imagine for a city of over 5 million people. Unless it was a Sunday or you didn't drive through the busy parts of the city. Anycase I enjoyed being on the ground as your passenger!
