To anyone with this error code, CHECK YOUR SPARK PLUGS! The previous owner never changed them and I was in the process of replacing them when the far left-most spark plug well was dipped in oil. Got a lot of paper towels and kept drying it up. Started up ol girl and the error code was no more!

The spark plug fouler works great. Only problem is that now in California during smog check the attendant will pass a mirror on a handle under the chassis or get down on the ground and look for an extender. If you have one on, you will fail smog, as they are not legal.

Folks according to the Experts a Vacuum Leak or Exhaust leak before the Catalytic Converter can also cause a P0420 code. A professional scan tool showing live data stream of your O2 sensors is the best way to confirm the malfunction.

Carbon buildup can also trigger Code P0420. My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo threw up the code even tho there were no symptoms of bad cats or o2 sensor so I thought what if it's carbon buildup? So I used 2 cans of Seafoam Intake Cleaner and after following directions it killed Code P0420 and the check engine light never came back on

My muffler was making a popping sound today after changing spark plugs and ignition coil. I reinstalled the spark plugs after checking to see if they may have been damaged but they checked out fine. The rough idling i had before went away so i was pleased. However 30 seconds into turning my 2002 ford escape on this popping sound started and i see the muffler back fire. Im going to try any of these steps. Hopeful that it works! Thanks for the informative video.

Try this like I did. It’s free. So before you go spending money just disconnect battery to reset code. Drive around on freeway. If it doesn’t come back on it was a glitch. After I reset code it never came back on. Passed smog and it’s been 2 years. No check engine light. Try this before you go spending lots of money unnecessary
