On April 22nd, Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Saragossa in 1529. In 1659, Lord Protector Richard Cromwell disbanded the English parliament. Other notable events include the birth of Soviet Union Prime Minister Vladimir Lenin in 1870, American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in 1904, and the first use of chlorine gas by the German army in 1915. In 1963, Lester B. Pearson became Prime Minister of Canada, and in 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated in the US. Optical fiber was first used for live telephone traffic in 1977.
