The Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc cave in the department of Ardèche (southern France) displays the oldest cave paintings known to date, dating back about 36,000 years ago. The paintings show wild horses, cave lions, woolly rhinoceroses and hundreds of other animals. There are 15 different species in total. They were engraved on the cave walls with red ocher or flints or drawn on the walls with charcoal. On June 22, 2014, the cave was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The cave is located near the famous natural stone bridge known as Pont d'Arc, the gateway to the Ardèche Gorges. In order not to destroy the wall paintings, meticulous attention is paid to the climate in the grotto. Therefore, unfortunately, the visit to the Grotte Chauvet is not possible. However, just a few kilometers from the original grotto, a copy called "Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche" allows visitors to admire all the riches of the original.
