How to cancel your New York Auto Insurance when moving out of state?

Moving out of New York and need to cancel your auto insurance because you got new insurance out of state?

Both questions have the same answer.

The only way to successfully remove a vehicle off your policy or cancel your New York Auto Insurance is to turn in your New York State License plates.

Failure to turn in the plates before canceling or removing the vehicle could cause fines from DMV and suspension of license.

A suspended NY license can then transfer to your new states license if you do not fix it correctly.

Am i just stupid or is this the worst most convoluted system possible????

For example, if I have a Dr license, license plate and first address in NY and I have a second residence in NJ where I spend most of my time and therefore my car too, can I just call my insurance company and ask them to recalculate the rate for NJ? Or can I use my NJ address for this? I don't want to move to NJ and want to keep my NY dr license. What advice can you give me?

there must be a NATIONAL driver's license ... driving is the same, and signals are the same from north to south and east to west ... therefore, why all this hassle in the US and Canada?

Do you have to mail the plates back to NY yourself or can the DMV of your new state mail them back?

You cannot remove or cancel auto insurance unless you surrender your valid license and registration. This is only applied 19 States.
Early cancellation of auto insurance without surrender plate became "Lapse of Auto Insurance". Hefty fees and fines is treacherous.
