My mother grew up in an apartment building constructed in the early 1920s that had an elevator somewhat like this. I was always a bit unsettled by it when I rode in it, in the 1960s.

Oh my god that motor is LOUD ! It sounds like some kind of hydraulic but it makes the same sounds in both directions so it has to be a traction one.
